R & D?

The heading suggests this week that we are talking about Research and Development, however in this case it means Restored and Dangerous. So we start with a really serious note, in fact we were shocked to such a level that Adam has made a video of it. An unprecedented move, but Adam felt that this really warranted a video to show our readers exactly what is out there. The laws in the UK have changed (a bad move in our opinion), for the MOT (Ministry Of Transport) tests for road worthy vehicles, the rules state that you don’t need an MOT if;

  • the vehicle was built or first registered more than 40 years ago
  • no ‘substantial changes’ have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years, for example replacing the chassis, body, axles or engine to change the way the vehicle works

As we have said before in a blog; we can pretty much say that all our customers still go for the MOT even though they don’t need to have it, why? To make sure the vehicle is safe. That’s safe to drive and safe to other road users, the last thing Classic Car owners want is their pride and joy have a failure resulting in it getting smashed up somewhere. A vehicle that was ‘fully restored’ in Europe (that’s all we are going to say), was shipped to the proud owner in the UK. The owner of this vehicle paid some strong money for this car at the time and was expecting a top quality car. After the car was imported to the UK the car was taken to a well-known Mustang ‘specialist’ restorer (whom we know of by the way), where this car was given a full UK MOT.

As with all new cars that we haven’t seen before in our care, we always give them a safety check and full once over. The reason is we want to be sure that we are not going to crash and die in the vehicles, and to also get a baseline of what needs to be done if anything.

We are going to respect the owners privacy on his Mustang, understandably he is not impressed as some serious work needs to be done before he can even think of driving it again. Even after the restoration has been done.

The sound on the video will show just how bad the mechanical parts are, the idler arm, geometry, ball joints, grease points valance are all covered here, that’s before we inspect the brakes, engine, electrics etc.

The moral of the story here is to make sure you know what you are getting. Ask other people who have had work done by other specialists to get an idea of their reputation. Lots of people claim to know what they are doing, but letting a car on the road like this is just dangerous and potentially lethal.

The blame is two-fold here, the restoration in the first place and then the person who gave the car an MOT afterwards.

The Onion,

Last week we promised a big update on ‘The Onion Mustang’, and here it is. Yogi has been busy getting the panels together and wanted the car on her own wheels to get the weight right ready for gaps. Most of the parts have been powder coated to a high standard and we have had them for a little while now. Yogi and Adam inspects the new parts;

The suspension on this car is made up of some rather clever movable parts called roller bearings. This allows the suspension to move much more in a controlled way, unlike the video above.

We have a couple of video that show what we mean;, and the movement here on the suspension is supposed to be there!

The car has also been treated to a ‘Shelby Drop’ using our own template which can be seen here with the suspension mounted below the original holes. Before you ask – no we won’t sell you one!

In order to get the correct geometry settings these car’s suspension on this year are adjustable via a cam and not use shims like the 64 – 66 cars, thus making it much quicker and a lot nicer to set up correctly.

As these parts are adjustable they did have a tendency to move on the odd occasion, to get around that we have some special parts to stop that.

These rather clever upgrades should enable the tyre to be in full correct contact with the road at all times. We must admit that we are looking forward to the road test on this suspension set up.

With the suspension in place and the rear axle bolted in the car sits on a set of (borrowed) wheels. In order to make the gaps correct Adam and Yogi placed a couple of engines in the car and a little trick the guys don’t want us to show you as it’s a Mustang Maniac secret. Now the car is a rolling shell, Yogi can set the gaps correctly and weld them up properly.

This Week has been the hottest for a long while that we can remember, so unfortunately this is where the road tests take just that little bit longer, especially if the roof is down. We have been doing as lot of service work which has kept us quiet, except when it comes to tea breaks and lunch times where Yogi is still in denial about the drag race rigging going on from last week! The jury is still out on that one by the way. As the weather is so nice we are going to be a little bit lazy on this post as we have had a good customer of ours virtually write this weeks post for us. So a special thanks to Derek Hutchinson who provided the photos and the words. There are some great little stories here and his trips around Europe. Take it away Derek:

NDB986E ’67 Red Mustang convertible

I bought the car in July 2012 from a guy in Newcastle and shocked him by deciding to drive it home to Staines (350 Miles). His nervous smile made me nervous, but I was determined to drive it home.  It was a glorious Friday afternoon and I had the roof down all the way home. Absolutely fabulous feeling and I knew I was in love immediately.

I am no mechanic but I am the son of a very good mechanic and it is surprising how much I remembered of what my father would look for in a car.  So I bought the car after making my checks based upon just my limited knowledge.  Fortunately for me the car has turned out to a very good buy, but soon after my drive home we started to experience serious over heating issues. Fortunately a neighbour recommended Adam at Mustang Maniac. Adam collected the car and discovered the remains of a perforated timing belt in the sump that had clogged up the oil pump but luckily no serious damage had been caused. Adam corrected a number of other minor issues caused by the previous owners ‘DIY’ repairs.

Harrods Breakdown. 2014

2 weeks before setting off on our first major road trip across France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland the car stopped dead outside Harrods in London on a lovely summer’s day. The girls went shopping while I waited for the AA. 2.5 hours. I bought a coffee and had a nap in the car with the bonnet up to demonstrate that I couldn’t move it anywhere.  I was awakened by about 20 Chinese people who had stopped their coach to take pictures of my car.  I even put the bonnet down for them, but was a touch offended when one lady pushed me to one side to get me out of the picture.

Back off to Adam and a new alternator required. At this point my wife began to worry if we were safe to do the trip in my Mustang. “I think we should go in your Mercedes darling” she said. Her friend who is very risk averse had been scaring her about this foolhardy nonsense in such an old car with poor brakes, no seatbelts, roll cage etc, etc.  I am very stubborn and insisted that if we didn’t go in the Mustang then I had no interest in driving across Europe and would not go. Fortunately my wife’s niece Laura was visiting from Colombia and was very excited about this once in a lifetime dreamy trip around Europe in a classic car.  So, off we went.  (MM: loving the picture of the drink on the fender! 🙂 )

Three of us, a full boot and a big case strapped to the boot rack (smart idea by Adam at MM). I really like the bot rack, only problem I couldn’t see through the rear window because the bag was too big.  So I bought a slimmer bag/case from the outlet village in Stuttgart.  I get sick on ferries so we always do the tunnel. Much quicker and convenient.

Quality repair on the go

Day one we drove across France heading for Stuttgart where we have friends and that would be our base.  At our first service station stop after crossing the border into Germany,  the chrome side strip on the car fell off when I opened my door.  It made a tremendous noise for such a flimsy part. Doris’s face (the wife) was a picture, full of dread and fear. This wreck isn’t safe and we are going to break down. I was having none of that silly nonsense, but had to think fast and decide what to do to repair it and keep a cool exterior, even though my stomach was churning and I was  twitching like hell. A quick scratch of the head and the mechanic in me thought ‘gaffa tape’. 5 minutes later we were back on our way with a quality repair “as good as new”.

Laura and I both agreed that the most significant and best part of this incident was that this was now an exciting adventure.  All of our many trips into Europe since have all had that exciting element of adventure. Excellent.

Inside Hitler’s Colosseum

From our base in Stuttgart we drove out to Austria and Switzerland (beautiful countryside and sights). Over a few days we saw the famous alpine castle used in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and we stayed in a lovely hotel in the picturesque town of Hallstatt in Austria where there is a great salt mine to visit and a beautiful lake for a little boat ride.

On our way back to Stuttgart we visited Nuremberg and in particular the museum and visitor centre at Hitlers famous camp where he gave many significant addresses to his troops and their families who attended the massive official and holiday gatherings there. The Nuremberg Rally was the annual rally of the Nazi Party in Germany, held from 1923 to 1938. They were large Nazi propaganda events, especially after Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in 1933.  It is a massive site and just behind the visitor centre (seriously interesting history) Hitler’s followers had started but not finished building a Colosseum for their illustrious leader.  He never got to see it.  The security guards saw me arriving with my car and ushered me to drive my car away from the visitor parking area and asked me to park my car slap bang in the centre of the Colosseum.  I was a little nervous at first until Doris’s friend who lives in Germany interpreted that they want to take pictures of your car in the Colosseum.  They took pictures of themselves and allowed us to take our own pictures, but they wouldn’t allow us to take any pictures of them.  I guess they were worried about getting found out.  Anyway it was very exciting for us and we have a very unique picture as a result.

At one point on this day we got caught in a big storm and even though the roof was up Doris and her friend thought it necessary to put their umbrella up in the back seat of the car to stop the rain getting them wet. Wish I could find the picture. We drove back home through Belgium and stayed at Antwerp. Very nice.

Home from first trip safe n sound

This is Doris, Laura and me popping a bottle of champagne to celebrate our fantastic adventure. Notice how that quality mechanical repair lasted the whole adventure. Adam should be proud of me.

We did a trip round France in 2015 but whilst we have lots of pictures from the places we visited we have no pictures with the car in shot.

2016 adventure

In 2016 we had another niece visit from Colombia and she wanted an adventure in the Mustang so we organised another trip in which we covered some different parts of Germany predominately cruising round the Black Forrest (tons of lovely little towns and villages). We had a lovely time but in the middle of the holiday we got caught in a nasty traffic jam on the Autobahn and the auto gear changer became seriously hot, so much so that I was worried that we would get stuck there. So I made the decision to pull into the hard shoulder and drive down it getting off at the next junction.  Getting some cool air circulation seemed to solve the problem. Unfortunately we have since had a number of instances of transmission heating up and loss of drive temporarily.  Adam is on the case and it looks like we need to schedule a new transmission this year.

Going nowhere fast on the Autobahn is a picture of us at a point when the traffic completely stopped for almost an hour without movement.

Crazy gang on the Autobahn is a snap of the group once we got moving again. Me and Angie in the front, Doris Paola and Silvana in the back.

Seriously overloaded.  Doris insisted on buying some garden pots (reasonably heavy) and we also brought Silvana back to England for a weeks break with Paola. I knew we were a bit heavy but it wasn’t until we stopped and got out at the Calais crossing car park, that I realised just how low the rear suspension was (and this was without us in the car). Even funnier, we locked the car and went in for a Starbucks and it wasn’t till we came out again that I realised I had locked the keys in the ignition (over tired).  Luckily it is relatively easy to break into an old convertible.

2018 Hamburg and Lubeck trip

Just one picture from our March trip this year. This one is outside the hotel we stayed in at Munster as we drove over to Hamburg and Lubeck. Sadly the transmission when cold couldn’t engage drive so I had to choose gear 1 or 2 to make a connection before it would engage with drive. We really need that new transmission. Pity we don’t have any pictures of driving in snow at Lubeck. It was a bit scary but also funny.

Some great stories there and well told, we had to make a little adjustment to a couple of little bits as this is a family blog at the end of day. 😉

Burnin’ Rubber & War Paint

This week we have moved away from the yard to somewhere a little more exciting – Santa Pod Raceway. The track was hired out for a private session by the “A602 Street & Strip Rods” their web link can be found here. They have invited Mustang Maniac out to play on the Friday this week and how could we say no? Well we didn’t actually. Adam had uncovered the UBB 1000bhp Mustang after it had been sitting in storage for seven years, he prepped the car “by giving it a clean” apparently.  [Editor: Somebody tell me that he was joking – right?]  The car was taken up on the LAR newest lorry for a little run out as well.

There was Adam, Yogi and Spence who were going to go down the strip. The plan for the day was to pay your track fee and you can go down the track as many times as you wanted. There was a good selection of cars, anything from daily driver Ford Kuga to full Pro Mod strip racers. Some of the races was like watching slow motion, others were intense where every tenth of a second counted. We have to take our hats or should that be crash helmets off to all those who had a go, regardless of their car. The weather was perfect, a hot sunny day to keep the newly coated raceway nice and sticky.

So in no particular order we have tried to group the pictures in a sequence. First up is Adam with his very first run with his UBB, with no burn out.

Adam had lots of wheel spin and bounced the rev limiter at the end, it still gave him his first run of 12.4 with a manual shift on a road car. We asked Adam how do you know when to change gear without a shift change light; his reply was typical Adam: “When it hits the rev limiter.” We think he was joking – wasn’t he?

Yogi set a personal best for the day, although he was still not happy about it as he botched a gear change and still posted a pretty epic 11.4

This set of pictures Yogi asked us to look at his wrinkles; “Tyres, on the (Bleep) tyres, not on me.” You can see what he means as the tyres twist and wrinkle up under the stress of being launched.

The further runs we have a video of Yogi against a newer Mustang.

Next up was Spence setting some great times in the low 13’s.

There was two races that were building up, Adam vs Yogi, and Yogi vs Spence. Adam went for a second run and had a miss-fire and had bit of smoke. Back in the paddock the initial diagnosis was an injector not jetting correctly. So the UBB was retired in order not damage it. However – Yogi had prepped the car before the day out, on lifting the bonnet to spot any obvious problems, Adam spotted that the battery lead was loose. Yep – suspected foul play from the Bear camp was rumoured. A full inquest will be had back at the yard over a Jaffa cake or three and a few cups of tea for weeks to come.

The paddock was full of some serious race cars and hot rods.

Some of the other cars varied from an old Land Rover to Prod Mod racers as we said before dropping into the mid 9’s.

The eagerly awaited race between the best of friends Yogi and Spence. 

Yogi won on the day for this showdown. The guys also tried to out do each other on the burn out front too. The war paint here says it was about even! Although Yogi claims that on the video he was winner there too. I dare say more Jaffa cakes and cups of tea will sort that debate out as well.

Spence also wanted to race another friend of his Dave G in his Mustang. This time Spence nailed a convincing win.

The other cars made for some great racing too. Look for the wrinkles on the “Heavy Chevy” here too.

There were a few casualties of the day, but that is racing. And there general consensus is that it’s not as easy at it looks! We hope to get these videos up on our YouTube channel as well soon.

Under Cover

We’re back to posting on our normal Sunday slot again, hope you didn’t miss us too much last week. We thought we get straight into today with updates on the customers cars and where we are with those.

Customers Cars:

Jacqui’s ’69

With the car back from paint work has begun on getting the car back together again.

Work has started on the sound proofing on the inside, a good upgrade, not cheap and nobody will ever get to see it as it’s covered up under the carpet!

With the parts being taken home by Roy for some “homework” they are then returned restored ready to fit back on the car, providing Adam and Yogi are happy with them first of course.

We tend to use our static dust cover sheets for short-term storage that clings to the paintwork when she is covered, lightweight and easy to remove without damage to the paint. Ideal solution ready for the next working session.

We had a little play with the colour filters, which changes the look and feel – any particular one you like best, the original, black and white or the moody low light version?

BRC (Blue Racing Coupe)

The engine on this little lady was given a check over and the first lick of paint ready to go back into the car.

The engine was put back together with the re-coated headers, and new rocker valve covers.

428 Super Cobra Jet

We didn’t take long to discover where the leak was under the dash. We could smell the antifreeze in the car so that can only point to on thing, the heater matrix. We removed the matrix and confirmed it was the cause of the leak. With the part replaced and fluids topped back up again it was time for a small service and check up underside. The oil and filter were changed as part of the standard service. With all the fluids where they now should be, it was time for a tune up of the carb to make her run smoother and more responsive. Job Done!

Work Shop News:

Adam has been on spending spree, (again). This time it was an expensive upgrade to the workshops as we are getting more and more requests to geometry alignment to the suspensions on these classic Mustangs. We use our own tried and tested specifications which are a slight tweak from the recommended book setups, but don’t ask the guys for the details because they won’t reveal it! Feedback from our customers is very positive after the fine tuning suspension set ups, word of mouth has got around that this really can make a difference to the car’s overall handling. There is still a Geo unit in Yogi’s work shop and now Adam has the very latest laser technology from Snap-On in his workshop. The logical reasoning behind the purchase is that it’s not always possible to Geo the cars when one is on the ramp unable to be moved, because it’s in bits – for now. Adam will also use it for the other vehicles in his LAR and SMR fleet vehicles too.

Book yourself into the workshop for a geometry suspension check up, it will also save your tyres wearing unevenly, unless you do lots of accidental burn-outs that is, then we can’t help you there! 😉

A little Rattled

This week we have the usual influx of the annual MOTs and car services we expect. We are always glad to see our loyal and returning customers back to us, and the customers know that they will get a top quality workmanship and quality service from people who care about their cars with no-nonsense advise. We pride ourselves here at Mustang Maniac on the fact our customers are always happy.

Continuing from the above a long-term customer Bob who called in to pick up his car after the MOT and a general service. Unfortunately we forgot to take a more formal picture under the Mustang Maniac sign. So we managed to grab a few last-minute pics of Bob leaving, also the pic with his hand up was the wave goodbye, and nothing to do with hiding his face!

Sad News:

We have received some very sad news from our friends at the Ford Heritage Workshop. Colin Gray, a much respected team member has sadly passed away after a short illness. Colin’s knowledge of ‘all things Ford’ was truly outstanding but he will be remembered, by those fortunate enough to know him, as a great person willing to help anyone and a true inspiration. He will be sorely missed.

The team at the Ford Heritage Workshop are very good friends of Mustang Maniac and we are extremely proud to have been able to help them with parts and advice when they restored the Ford Motor Company 65 Mustang Fastback.

Mustang Maniac would like to send our sincere condolences to Colin’s family at this very sad time.

Customer Cars:

We have in the workshop a nice ’68 390 GT which is a nice resto-mod as Yogi likes to say.

The car was brought in with the customer saying there are some annoying rattles and knocks etc. So we were tasked with curing the issues. These are often more difficult than it sounds as it’s a long process of elimination; road test, adjust or fix, then more checks and repeat. This little lady has been modified with what looks to have been a race car set up, a very unusual set up as there are no leaf springs, instead just supports, bars and linkages!

So far we have sorted the obvious creeks and groans out but, as there are so many bushes and connections we need to make sure they are all within tolerances and just keep testing until they are all fixed. So far the bear is happy!

Shelby GT500 1:8th scale DeAgostini model update. 

Here we are with an update we have been waiting for; the actual body shell. The parcel was large and guessed this was the shell.

The other three issues are the two fenders and the front radiator panel which holds them together across the front, in turn the fenders are screwed to the body shell by the cowl section.

We think that once the car is completed that we are going to actually wax and polish this paintwork. We would go so far as to say it’s better than some of the past efforts we have seen on the much larger real thing!

With the fenders attached this pretty much gives the overall appearance of the model.

We know it’s only a model, but this is a point for the build. There are just two screws each underside of the cowl section to hold the fenders in place. It took a total of fifteen minutes to build but what a massive step forward all of a sudden. We have updated the main page for whole model build.

We finish with a selfie photo-bomb by the Yogi, Adam even found time to play with some filters on his phone too, we kinda like it cartoon style. 🙂

Taking Stock Of Christmas

Every year we are spoilt by our customers with gifts along with the odd bottle of drink, and his year has been no different. We have had cases of beers delivered, boxes of wine, a turkey, a “Boris” on a bike and a couple of cartoons, but more about those a little further down in the office news.

Opening Times Of Mustang Maniac over Christmas:

We shall be closing the offices on the 23rd December till the 3rd January 2017. Please note – the phones will be turned off,  if you call there will be no answer. The WebShop WILL be operating as normal for all orders EXCEPT any sheet metal. The reason for the total closure of the offices is that we need to do a major stock take and we will be moving some of the sheet metal around to their new storage locations. Off course some people think it won’t take long to count a few bits as we area a “small time parts dealer”. Obviously the thousands of parts we stock from a single bolt to a complete shell all need to be double checked. The WebShop is correct – if it says it’s in stock; then it’s in stock. Calling us to check will only refer you back to the WebShop. The levels of stock could be holding a dozen items we don’t sell much off and only a few items we lots off. So we want to address those balance for our customers to hold even more of the popular items in stock.

While we are talking about the stock we have started to stock some more of the Falcon parts from our suppliers. So if you see the parts you want, buy them as we have limited stock of the items at the moment. We have lots more parts on order and are just waiting for the deliveries.

Vouchers: 

It seems that a lot of people took our advice and bought some Mustang Maniac vouchers, more so than we expected. In fact we had to have a new batch rush printed to cope with the demand. We now have plenty more in stock and could still be with you by Christmas if you order quickly. Thanks to Lance for replenishing our voucher supplies so quickly for us.

Office News:

We start with the Boris who sits proudly on his motor bike. This was hand painted and customised for us here at Mustang Maniac, Boris refers to a nickname of one of our customers Gary. (It’s a long story that may be told if Adam has the time when you catch up with him next.)

We also had some fantastic cartoon drawn for Adam which features quite heavily the Las Vegas trip and the “Small time parts dealer” references we may have mentioned once or twice. There are a lot of “in-house” jokes there but the moral is so true as it says at the bottom.

Yogi also received his cartoon too, those that know Yogi are fully aware that he likes to tear up the quarter-mile strip now and again, so this was rather fitting for the big bear.

Customers Cars:

We will start with the Mach1 restoration which has now come out from the Yogi workshop and taken the short trip to the paint shop. The panels have all fitted and gapped up correctly to the high Yogi standards. The front of the car sits on a steering dolly, the rear axle is still attached after being rebuilt. Looking forward to seeing this little lady back in colour.

Pop Rivet Convertible. 

Last week we were moving the 67 Convertible into the Panel Shop. We asked for a nick name for the car while she is here being restored to her former beauty. The name has been given “Pop Rivet Convertible”. I’m sure you won’t need us to tell you why when you see the inside up close. Yogi has decided to get adventurous with the camera and has taken a video of the car while he prowls around it. Yes the Yogi speaks on it too.

The car is a little worse than we expected with the previously poor repairs. We are often asked to quote for this type of work to be done. Some people do, we simply won’t until we see what we have to deal with. Giving a quote for worse case scenario is not always the right thing to do as budgets can often change throughout the restoration process. In this case the rear arches didn’t look to bad from the outside, we were expecting a new rear quarters and maybe outside wheel wells, but the whole wheel arches needs replacing due to the soft and thin metal. The guys cut the centre of the panels out to see what was lurking inside. The first pic here shows the rear of the car not looking to bad as we moved it to the panel shop. We suspect that by now you know that we can sort all this out to be as good as new.

The wheel arches show some pop rivets holding it to the quarter panel which has caused some issues.

The front fire wall has been poorly patched and badly welded on top of the old metal with a large gap at the top. We are at a loss as to why it was done like that though. But, it’s looking like the fire wall will need to be replaced depending on what we see after the metal is inspected further around these patches.

The inside floor pans will need to be replaced as a previous repair has been pop riveted sections in place as well as some more suspect welding.

The rear chassis legs have been replaced before and not spot welded in places where would expect them to welded. These will have to be replaced too as the rear suspension holes have gone rusty.

The front will need some work on the front chassis rails too as they have gotten rusty beyond repair, especially on a structural part of the car.

The car will need to go onto our jig and carefully map the measurements out as we can’t be sure the previous chassis repairs were done correctly. Like we said earlier, we have seen worse and we made that good as new. This will be as good as new soon. Then we won’t be able to call her the “Pop Rivet Convertible”, maybe “eye popping convertible” once she’s restored.

We have another project on the go too and we will starting that in the new year. A coupe bought from the USA that needs the Mustang Maniac touch.

A Restoration First?

While we have been busy posting about our SEMA 2016 trip, there has been a few changes going on behind the scenes. We have removed the “graveyard” where the old cars awaiting our magical touches. And will be replaced with a “little project” Adam has in mind. Those cars will now be going into storage in the big shed for now. Yogi realising that these will be coming his way soon!

We are still planning on posting the SEMA 2016 day four as well as the Shelby Heritage Museum tour we promised you over the coming week. We had taken almost nine hundred pictures that day and we still need to sort out the better pics to upload for you.

A first for the Restoration industry?

So back to the what we do best, showing you what we do. As we like to think we are pretty unique we have made some serious decisions while we were in Las Vegas over a beer or two. We currently have our Mustang Maniac Forum that is popular, but it has started to die down. This is not unique to our forum though, it’s happened to a lot of other forums too. The mobile phone is the communication device for emails, photo’s and keeping up with the world on the go. So logging into a forum with passwords on a mobile, leaving a reply, then waiting for a response all takes just to long in this busy world of ours. So we had an idea and are very excited it, that idea has taken off very well with a small “trial” invited group of members.

We have created a Facebook Chat group called “Mustang Maniacs“.

From there you can see some real-time updates from us along with updates from other members of the group. Now this group is going to be all about Mustangs or Fords, so there is none of this “I’m popping out for a pint of milk” rubbish. However if you said “I’m going out in my Mustang to an event” – that’s a whole new conversation to be had. We have now opened this up this new group to everybody to upload their car pictures, stories for others to comment on or just to read what we and others are up to. If you have a question – members from the Mustang Maniac forum may have that answer for you, on the group now. If you have a technical sales question; we still request you email adam@mustangmaniac.co.uk for further details as normal, we won’t be doing business on the group. There are moderators who will be keeping an eye on things too, so keep it nice and no moaning, or you could find yourself blocked. To show this all in action we had a three-way example view. We had to get a customer’s car out from storage to be moved to the panel shop. Lance “live” streamed the move to the Mustang Maniacs Group, we also took pictures of the live streaming in progress for the blog here. Filming the filming if you like.

Customer’s Cars:

’67 Convertible Full Restoration

This is a new project that the Yogi will be starting soon. It’s a ’67 289cid Convertible, which needs some serious attention. We aim to bring this project to you step by step as you would expect. This is the car that was moved in the live stream from above.

We are looking for a nickname for this car now. Perhaps the owner Mark may have an idea for us?

The ’69 with the new front end has been taken off the jig after Yogi had welded the new panels back in place. The car was moved to Yogi ‘s work shop (Yogi says that’s an upgrade for a car accommodation), where the work can be continued under the car. The underside will need to be rubbed down in order for the final welding to be completed. The rubbing down and grinding work can be heard going on in the background of the live video we mentioned above.

The new front looks great and won’t be long before she is off to paint.

Chris’s Coupe

The last few weekends since Chris has got back from Vegas he has been working hard to get his car ready for some metal work and body prep. Chris had stripped and rubbed the inside of the engine bay down and has started to paint it. Being in the storage shed Chris had a flood light on the engine bay. from a distance it looked like a little star shining down on him!

We suspect that the complete engine bay will be done by the end of the day (Saturday). A good start and there is nothing like seeing your first coats of paint going on the car. It transforms the whole car from a work in progress to a restoration under way.

News:

Adam like to keep an eye on things for sale and see what the Mustang Market is up to. On this occasion he contact a guy who was selling an engine. The story is that the previous owner took it out of a car and nobody knows much about the engine. Adam was sent a few photo’s and bought it straight away. Why, because he knew this was “special” to the other blocks that come up for sale. The chrome rocker covers were rusty as was the sump. No problems there as they can be replaced. But taking the rocker covers of the engine, Adam’s suspicions were correct. He had found a little diamond in the rough. Adam and Yogi

What we have here is a brand new block with a very nice set of GT40P heads on it.

The guys continued to strip the rest of it apart to see what was going on.

This was a new rebuilt engine and the cylinders still had the honing marks on them. The timing chain was new as were the valves, cam and the cam rollers.

What did Adam think? Well, they say a picture speaks a thousand words. Speaking of thousands; Adam reckons the work that had gone into the engine and the use of Ford stamped parts, “You can easily add a nought to what I paid for this engine, bargain!” Shame that luck didn’t run with him on the card tables at Las Vegas!

Adam pointed out the differences on the heads and how he spotted it. The GT40P heads needed better springs to make use of the valve openings depending on cam and the larger exhaust porting. Headers will need to be specific GT40P fits. The headers are right up there with the fabled “HiPo” units, apart from modern alloy heads this is about as good as it got. But a lot of people want originality and more power. What we have here is both.
