SEMA 2018 – Part 1

Adam and his wife Lynn had arrived at Las Vegas safely and were looking forward to the SEMA show. As promised we have been sent the first batch of photo’s, but we are obviously going to be a day behind due to the time delay. As there are a lot of photos, we will start outside and work our way in, apart from the first pic here, which is Adam at his favourite car show, followed by Lynn posing with a couple of big trucks.

A glorious day as most days are in Las Vegas which didn’t disappoint the crowds starting to turn up to the show.

And of course the batch of Mustangs outside;

Perhaps the most important car there at SEMA? The original Bullitt ‘Hero’ car that the legend Steve McQueen actually drove in the film, which was recently discovered and now doing the car show circuit.

The other equally as famous Mustang is Ken Blocks ‘Hoonigan RTR v2’

Inside the great halls;

It wasn’t long before the ‘celebs’ wanted to have their selfies taken with Adam and Lynn!

Adam’s routine each year is to go straight to the Ford stand. He can catch up with some old friends and catch up on the latest news and insider info.

A car that was getting a lot of attention was the drag strip ready ‘Cobra Jet 50th Anniversary Edition’ with only 68 being made. The car has at ‘least’ 700bhp, but rumoured to be closer to the 1,000bhp mark – with a 1/4 mile at around 8 seconds. All this could be yours for $130,000 + extra for badges and graphics! Tha’s IF you can get hold of one in the first place. We think for that type of performance, that is not a lot of money for that car! Especially if you think how much people pay for their custom drag strip cars to try and go that quick. Best of all, this is a Ford (rather special) out the box car, built just for the straight line blast!

It’s also rumoured that Adam had all his beer free for the day as well! Knowing Adam – it’s true. 🙂

Cheers!

We will bring you the next installment tomorrow in ‘Part 2’

All Hands On Deck

With the amount of cars we have in the yard at the moment we needed to make some space to get them all in. So Adam decided to leave the offices in the more than capable hands of Morgan while he got down to the yard with the cars for the entire day. Last week we posted about a convertible that had our LED conversion kit fitted on it, while she was waiting for the new hood to arrive,  it was decided that she also needed a gearbox upgrade. As Mustang Maniac are now suppliers and fitters of Gear Vendors Overdrive Units – Yogi got busy under the car.

The Gear Vendors unit is an exceptional piece of kit and Yogi has one on his car for his drag racing, of course the main benefit for us mere mortals, is the top end overdrive to knock huge amounts of revs of the engine at speed, thus increasing mpg and comfort while reducing stress and noise.

The unit comes with a revised housing for the back of the gearbox and all the electronic wizardry, fittings and pipes you need. The old housing was removed and an inspection while we were at it to make sure all was good in the world of the C4.

The magic box of tricks that controls the shifts and housing are fitted along with the electrical connections and the pipes.

Job done except for the prop shaft to be fitted and checking the software setup. If you want this upgrade email adam@mustangmaniac.co.uk and he will advise you. The additional Borgeson steering upgrade was a straight forward job for Yogi who can do them in his hibernation sleep.

The next job was the roof, Paul and Adam got stuck into the job and it’s rumoured that they even missed a tea break, the rest of us are not convinced about that somehow. So we need to know who started such terrible rumours!

Hidden Away

While all this was going on a stack of ‘stuff’ appeared in the boys club. So a sneak peek as to what Adam was up to revealed a superb bespoke full leather upholstered seat set. We are not sure where these are going yet, but they will look amazing wherever they are fitted.

Even the door cards are in leather and the matching rear kick panels covered all to match.

Along with the recent order we are pleased to say that we now have the Limited Edition Shelby wheels now in stock. These rims are available in 20″ x 9″ or 20″ x 10″ with the choice of black or chrome!

We have a limited number of these wheel sets at the moment, so if you want a set, hurry up, get your wallet out and order them as these will go!

The link for the wheels can be found here for the 20 x 9 Chrome. The link for the wheels can be found here for the 20 x 9 Black. The link for the wheels can be found here for the 20 x 10 Black, by the time you get to read this post they will be on the WebShop.

Ford Article

It’s no secret that Yogi likes a blast down the drag strip, but what if we told you Ford have built a car to beat most drag cars straight out the box? Read this article we found:

DEARBORN, Mich. – Ford Performance today revealed the quickest drag racing Mustang ever, capable of covering a quarter-mile in the mid-eight-second range.

The 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet is a limited-edition turnkey race car that honors the 50th anniversary of the original that dominated drag strips in 1968. The new Cobra Jet makes its public debut this weekend at the 2018 Woodward Dream Cruise.

The Ford Performance Parts team developed the 50th Anniversary car to be the most powerful and quickest Mustang Cobra Jet from the factory ever – capable of topping 150 mph while turning in a mid-eight-second quarter-mile run. The project epitomizes the close teamwork between traditional and motorsports engineering groups to maximize the design, performance and durability of production Mustangs.

“From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build on Cobra Jet’s success at the track over five decades,” said Eric Cin, global director, Ford Performance Parts. “This has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street.”

The car is powered by a special 5.2-liter version of Ford’s famed 5.0-liter V8, strengthened and outfitted with a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger. The engine sends power to the ground through a 9-inch solid rear axle, two-way coil-over shocks with adjustable ride height and a low-drag disc brake system from Strange Engineering as well as a four-link rear suspension with antiroll and panhard bars.

Additional factory-provided racing performance upgrades include an NHRA-certified safety roll cage, FIA-certified seats and anniversary-badged racing wheels.

The new Mustang Cobra Jet is available in either Race Red or Oxford White and can be outfitted with exclusive 50th Anniversary graphics and badging. Customers can order now at an MSRP of $130,000. Production is limited to 68 cars, in honor of Cobra Jet’s 1968 debut.

Making history again

The car’s long history of winning and setting records dates to its debut race weekend, where it commanded NHRA Super Stock at the 1968 Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. Since then, its winning engine formula has served to power Ford Mustang, Mercury Cougar, Ford Fairlane, Ford Torino and other vehicles. Credit for this formula goes to legendary East Coast Ford dealer Bob Tasca, grandfather of current Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang NHRA Funny Car driver Bob Tasca III and the man who coined the phrase “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.”

After its display at Mustang Alley as part of the Woodward Dream Cruise, the 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet will travel the following weekend to Norwalk, Ohio, for the 50th Anniversary Ford Performance Cobra Jet Reunion at Summit Motorsports Park – the largest gathering of Cobra Jets in history. More than 150 vehicles dating back to 1968 are expected to attend.

Mustang Cobra Jet timeline

1968 – Original FE 428-cubic-inch V8-powered Cobra Jet is created:
·  Ford produces 50 lightweight Mustangs to hold the 335-horsepower engine; six are shipped to Holman Moody and Bill Stroppe to be prepared for NHRA competition
·  Al Joniec pilots one of the six to Cobra Jet’s first victory

2008 – Rebirth of factory Mustang Cobra Jet, M-FR500-CJ, 40 years later:
·  Powered by a supercharged 5.4-liter dual-overhead-cam V8, this drag racing renaissance was the first Stock Eliminator car to dip into the eight-second zone at an NHRA National Event
·  Unlike the original, the 50 produced this time around do not feature VINs, so they are not street legal
·  John Calvert drives a Cobra Jet featuring Joniec tribute paint scheme to victory at NHRA Winternationals on 41st anniversary of its original win

2009-16 – M-FR500-CJ:
·   250 additional cars are produced with dozens of domestic drag racing records, victories and championships achieved across NHRA, IHRA, NMCA and NMRA
·   Drivers range from experienced veterans to young drag racing stars in the making
·   Through half a century, Mustang Cobra Jet orders are still being placed at local Ford dealerships!

If you feel the need to beat our very own Yogi race car, this may be the option just for you. Yogi has one of the fasted Mustangs out there his response to that article? ‘I built mine myself, Ford works had to build one to be me!’ So he may not have used those exact words, but that was the gist of it! 😉

Under Cover

We’re back to posting on our normal Sunday slot again, hope you didn’t miss us too much last week. We thought we get straight into today with updates on the customers cars and where we are with those.

Customers Cars:

Jacqui’s ’69

With the car back from paint work has begun on getting the car back together again.

Work has started on the sound proofing on the inside, a good upgrade, not cheap and nobody will ever get to see it as it’s covered up under the carpet!

With the parts being taken home by Roy for some “homework” they are then returned restored ready to fit back on the car, providing Adam and Yogi are happy with them first of course.

We tend to use our static dust cover sheets for short-term storage that clings to the paintwork when she is covered, lightweight and easy to remove without damage to the paint. Ideal solution ready for the next working session.

We had a little play with the colour filters, which changes the look and feel – any particular one you like best, the original, black and white or the moody low light version?

BRC (Blue Racing Coupe)

The engine on this little lady was given a check over and the first lick of paint ready to go back into the car.

The engine was put back together with the re-coated headers, and new rocker valve covers.

428 Super Cobra Jet

We didn’t take long to discover where the leak was under the dash. We could smell the antifreeze in the car so that can only point to on thing, the heater matrix. We removed the matrix and confirmed it was the cause of the leak. With the part replaced and fluids topped back up again it was time for a small service and check up underside. The oil and filter were changed as part of the standard service. With all the fluids where they now should be, it was time for a tune up of the carb to make her run smoother and more responsive. Job Done!

Work Shop News:

Adam has been on spending spree, (again). This time it was an expensive upgrade to the workshops as we are getting more and more requests to geometry alignment to the suspensions on these classic Mustangs. We use our own tried and tested specifications which are a slight tweak from the recommended book setups, but don’t ask the guys for the details because they won’t reveal it! Feedback from our customers is very positive after the fine tuning suspension set ups, word of mouth has got around that this really can make a difference to the car’s overall handling. There is still a Geo unit in Yogi’s work shop and now Adam has the very latest laser technology from Snap-On in his workshop. The logical reasoning behind the purchase is that it’s not always possible to Geo the cars when one is on the ramp unable to be moved, because it’s in bits – for now. Adam will also use it for the other vehicles in his LAR and SMR fleet vehicles too.

Book yourself into the workshop for a geometry suspension check up, it will also save your tyres wearing unevenly, unless you do lots of accidental burn-outs that is, then we can’t help you there! 😉

Yet More Storage

This weeks post is a little late and we shall explain why a little further down the post. But we start with the promised fulfilled to show what Adam has been working on for the last couple of weeks. We are pleased to show you the new storage area for the radiators and some more suspension parts. Yet another area was created for the storage of these bulky items as the current system wasn’t working as efficiently as it could have been.

The packing bench has been used for temporary storage until we get more storage space in the room.

To give you a quick glimpse of the daily stock posting, this is awaiting a pick up from the couriers at the bottom of stairs to the office.

We also said that we had some new wheels also in stock. The wheels we are excited about are the classic and favourite choice of many, the Magnum 500’s in 15″ x 7″ size at the moment. These are different as they are all in satin black and no chrome, except out quality chrome lug nuts that really set the wheels off. There are many designs out there for the general Mustang market and those wheels have been sprayed black for the look they require. This satin black effect is the look so many owners desire, but now in that classic Magnum style look.

We had one set in for our own review and they bought immediately by a customer who fell in love with them. The centre caps can come any many different designs, above they are sporting our own Mustang horse in black and chrome. Our very own Mustang Maniac centre logo looks pretty cool too. We have all sorts of centres for your wheels to match your paint colours, black, red, blue, with or without writing.

If you are interested in a set they are flying out the doors at the moment and we have to order these as a special item due to demand. Click the link here or cut and past to your browser for the WebShop page.

Customers Cars:

We have had in a rare car for a little Mustang Maniac Magic to be lavished on her to sort out an unknown leak. This is a genuine rare 428 Super Cobra Jet.

To trace an as yet unknown leak the dash cover is currently out so she looks worse than she is. I great example of a fabled car.

But our readers have seen this many times before, we are not afraid to show you what we do and how we do it. Speaking of which; a little secret can sort of be revealed, a set of Adam’s headers were spotted after being aluminium coated. We of course know what this little “upgrade” is, but does anybody else know? Especially as it’s on a set of classic Mustang headers!

OK, the reason we are a little late with the post?

Well, Saturday Adam had a BBQ and another private BBQ on Sunday. Now, we are not sure why Adam has a tea towel wrapped around his head, but he says it was to keep the sweat out of his eyes as “he was the only one working, AGAIN”.

The food was great, Adam’s BBQ’ed Steak and Cheese sandwiches are to die for!

The company was great and good time was had by all, thanks to everybody who could make it. There wasn’t much wine left or beers to come to that. Still trying to think of that excuse for the late blog post! 😉

Thanks Adam, when is the next one?

Our Best Wishes and a “get well soon” to John who is in recovery at the moment.
