Sunglasses To Snow Goggles

The UK has been gripped in the midst of a Siberian storm that lasted a week or so, of course a little snow ground the UK to a standstill, we just can’t cope with snow. But Mustang Maniac ploughs on nevertheless. See what we did there? Anyway, just before the snow landed we had a our friend and customer Lance drop his ’65 coupe down to us that needed some more upgrades, one of which was a special order that had just arrived in for him.

Here is the process of those upgrades, all very subtle and make a huge difference.  Except that special order which isn’t subtle by any shape of the imagination!

Although Lance was posing in his sunglasses here, they were soon swapped out for snow goggles a few days later!

The side shot above shows the first set 17″ “Styled Steel” alloy rims in the country and they were fitted to a Mustang. The fronts are 215/50R17 7Jx17 and a larger 225/50R17 8Jx15 at the rears for the staggered look. In the garage we were asked to look at the lights to improve them. This was a simple upgrade with Mustang Maniac’s crystal clear headlight upgrade kit for a more modern look. You can easily see the difference between the old and new when they are next to each other.

Keeping on the lights theme and poor visibility we also have various colours of LED’s for the dash. Some may think it’s a gimmick but honestly they make a massive difference compared to the incandescent bulbs and filters originally fitted. Lance asked for the popular blue set to be fitted. this was fine until the blue lights didn’t look right and so the rev counter was also upgraded to match. The next upgrade was a special order also an upgraded special order at that. Lance wanted to hear his music and wanted a sub woofer “upgrade”. This kit contains the mounting board, 2 x 275w speakers, the 250w amp and all the wiring and fittings as standard. However the upgrade to the special order was to swap out the 250w amp with a 500w version. This was going to be done properly and not just drag the wires under the carpets, so panels and seats were removed, trims and all cable wrapped correctly for that much sought after stock look.

The board is a straight replacement with the speakers already mounted and just needed the wires routed. Paul loves a bit of wiring and made it look easy and stock all linked to the starter solenoid. The last little touch was the bass adjustment that Paul neatly mounted in the glove box out of sight. Lance made a comment about this little addition, “I can turn the bass up on my Frank Sinatra now when I’m driving at night.”

Lance’s response to the upgraded and thumping sounds? “I can hear my music at night now!” There was one last thing, his air filter was upgraded to the Edelbrock hi-flow 3″ pan with a 1.5″ drop. This allows more air into the carb and thus if tuned correctly a little more power.

As we spent a fair bit of time on the car it was “Yogi’ed” as well, a Yogi sticker was stuck under the hood by the bear himself. Lance’s comment on this was sort of predictable, “At least it can’t be seen when I’m driving at night.” 😀

Customers Cars:

’69 Mach1

This has moved along quite quickly with the exhaust being fitted, Yogi does his thing and makes it fit like a glove and made some bespoke joins as a result. What you don’t see makes all the difference as well. We have seen some “one-off, bespoke and hand-made” exhaust systems that have been taken off the car and replaced with our systems within a matter of days. Just because you can’t see it – doesn’t mean it can be given any less attention to detail.

Witht he exhaust in place we prepped the engine by pumping the oil around the engine, filling the carb bowls with fuel and added a little in the intake ready for the fire up. Default carb settings were made and Yogi’s sixth sense for a timing set up. The result was this a first time fire up of the engine. You will notice Yogi quickly moves in with the screw driver to start adjusting mixtures and settings to hold the idle while the timing was then adjusted. As per usual this will be taken for a road test and then adjusted properly.

The topside of the car got the same attention to details with the hood cables being fitting and closed the hood. Yogi walked away with another smile on his face for a well earned cup of tea.

We have had some interest in the very limited run of stickers we had made on a few of our cars, “Born to Perform”. There was only few of them made for us, but the interest has been shown. We are asking if there is enough demand for a special order; should we get a another limited batch made?

A Modern Touch

We mentioned last week that we had an email for a daily driver and we wanted to know if there were anymore examples out there used for a daily ride basis. It looks like there is more than just one of them out there. An email from Bob Frantzen who tells us; “I have a 1967 Mustang coupe that I have had since 1981. Hope you don’t mind my friend posing for a quick shot.” How could we refuse?

We are liking this section, but we can’t deny that it’s been a slow response so far, perhaps we were right and these beautiful classic Mustangs are only out when the sun shines? We were expecting this to be a sparse section to be honest, so why not prove us wrong and send us your pics!

Customer Cars:

It’s a known fact that our resident man bear likes a little “RestoMod” when he is let loose on a project. Recently we had a customers car in that has the classic rust spots on the rear quarters that needed sorting out, and that means Yogi dusted of his paint gun. He also made a little interior update too which was simple enough, but the care taken makes all the difference.

The old rust was rubbed down to see just how far the metal worm had gotten.

The old rusty metal was cut away and new metal fabricated in its place.

With a little sanding and that little bit of magic that happens in the Yogi cave, we have the repaired sections that will last for a good few years to come.

After the outside was repaired the interior got the modern touch with the USB power supplies. These sockets are now becoming more the norm as the cigarette lighter adaptors are dying away in favour of the much neater USB sockets. The result is subtle and it certainly doesn’t ruin the interior stock look.

The underhood was asked for a little tidy up and we obliged with a re-wrap of some wiring and the difference again is subtle, and if you can see the work – then we have done it properly as it looks stock.

’69 Mach1

Jaqui’s Mach1 has been worked on and the aircon has been fitted to the engine. Not sure it will be used any time soon as it’s the middle of winter here! But the engine is taking shape and ready for the initial stock settings tune up.

The sun visors now are in and the rest of the engine hardware fittings in place.

 

With the basics now done we have a rolling restoration. Not long now for the completion and then its the fine tuning and adjustments before we let Jacqui and Roy have her back.

The Onion Mustang:

We have been waiting for a slot to start on the “Onion” again. The floor pans and the rear chassis legs were mounted on the jig and measured out from the original dimensions we had taken and marked points on the jig. Some tack welds made and more measuring with more parts added to make sure the built up layers will fit together again. Once we were happy then the full neat welds were made so the floor pan and chassis could be removed from the jig and carefully rested on the floor. The underside was worked on to rub down the welds and seam seal the joints and finished with our red lead paint.

Rollin’ On

We would like to thank our followers for some rather amusing response emails to the photos that were taken of Adam at the SEMA show. Some we couldn’t possibly put up on a family blog! We can answer a question that was answered a couple of times. Was that all the photos of other cars? Honestly, Yes that was all the photo’s Adam took of non Mustang Cars! Quite an impressive record we must say. Congratulations to Ford.

Customers Cars:

The “Blue Racing Coupe” is now at a point where she is ready for road tests. The engine was wired up and plumbed in over the week.

With the engine all fired up and some base line setups made we could put the car panels back together again. The rear axle was replaced with a reconditioned as good as new 9″ version to do away with the welded up rear end that made the car a real handful to drive on normal roads as a result.

Not quite the race car she was turned into, but much more enjoyable to drive and will still be able to hold her own if somebody wants to try and race her.

’69 Mach1

Jacqui’s car has some temporary wheels on it now and can be rolled around the workshops as we need to now. This is always a big step as all the main running and steering gear has been fitted. The car’s paint job looks pretty cool out in the evening sun.

Andrew Hedley has done some nice charity work with is ’65 Coupe. He brought his car to us to sort out its “saggy bottom.” We have the before and after pictures his. New rear springs and shocks makes a massive difference to the car’s handling that’s for sure, as well as giving the car its aesthetically pleasing correct stance. Must be all that wine Andrew keep filling the trunk up with? 😉

Watching This Space

We have many projects on the go at one time, in fact it’s a logistics game to work out what is where and what can be worked on in the mean time. This week is one of those weeks where things started to fall into place nicely, we even managed to make more room but we shall get into that in a little bit. To start the post this week we start with the Park & Pic, at the moment we have good few cars ready to post on this section. If we haven’t posted yours yet – don’t worry we will as there is a queue at the moment.

So we start with Jimmy’s 1970 302 fastback. We had this little lady in a few weeks ago for a few little jobs like a service and replacing the alternator. The Slot Mag wheels were taken off and polished back up to their full former glory.

Customers Cars:

We have the Mach1 Restoration project finally getting some colour on her now. So as promised here is the selection of the pics showing the process. Here the seams are sealed up before the etch and the primers are applied.

Then some base coats added the outside and the engine bay given a lick of Satin Black.

Inside was given her coats of colour and panels sprayed ready for fitting.

It wont be long before the outside coats go on and we can get this lady back ready for her rebuild.

Our Yard:

We mentioned at the beginning we managed to move a few things around and we have a couple of cars from a couple of customers with their own temporary little parts of our yard.

With space now being made Adam managed to get his cars where he wanted them to be, so he put a couple of his Shelbys away properly.

Your name on the wall?

We mentioned a post or two ago to watch this space as Adam has had another idea! Well we can now reveal what he means. The fence at the back of the yard has now been replaced with nice fresh steel sheets and lights, the down side is that it looks a little bland at the moment. So what was Adam’s idea? Well this wall would make excellent advertising space. Being as we take lots of pics of the cars in the yard and post them on our blog, those pictures are seen in the UK as well as all around the World literally, confirmed by our blog statistics. We have spoken about this idea to our Snap-On rep who comes to see us, and he has started us off with his illuminated sign:

Adam will be having a big Mustang Maniac sign up on the wall soon along with possible project that we hope will come to fruition also for the wall which will look amazing. So how can this idea help you? Get one of your signs on our wall for the advertising space and see what it can do for you. Adam also has a great Idea to turn this side of the Yard into something special, again all will be revealed soon. The rates won’t be stupid and Adam is very open for discussion depending on size etc. just have a quick conversation with Adam for what you want and he will be happy to do a deal with you.

Unusual Request: 

We often take on some little projects such as the pedal cars we sprayed up to match the car a little while ago. This time Adam was asked to spray a Raleigh Chopper back to her former glory!  This is a very collectable bike now and can exchange hands for the cost of a cheap run around car!

A little history of the start of the Releigh Chopper

The Chopper’s patent was applied for in the US during 1967. The Chopper was introduced at American trade shows in January 1969 but it was not until April 1969 when Raleigh Choppers were available for public to purchase . The bike featured a choice of a single-speed coaster hub, or a 3-speed or 5-speed Sturmey Archer gear hub, selected using a frame-mounted console gear lever — one of its “cool” features. Other features that appealed to the youth market were the unusual frame, long padded high-back seat, sprung seat at the back, high-rise (ape hanger) handlebars, ‘bobbed’ mud guards (fenders) and differently sized wheels — 16 in (41 cm) front and 20 in (51 cm) rear. The rear hoop above the seat resembled a dragster anti roll bar “sissy bar”. Even the kickstand was designed to give the stationary bicycle a lean reminiscent of a parked motorcycle. Tyres were wider than usual for the time, with a chunky tread on the rear wheel, featuring a red line around the sidewall. In 1970 the Raleigh Chopper was launched in the UK market this was a triple launch for Raleigh, with the Chopper branded as The Hot One, alongside the Moulton Mk3 (The Smooth One), and the RSW Mk3 (The Dolly One).

Peeling Off The Layers

The “Onion” Mustang has picked up a few interested comments, and yes we can confirm that we will bring the full restoration to you. Just like the “French” Mustang or the “Mastic Mustang” the car was in a bit of a mess should we say, but now they look absolutely stunning. This is again a big project from the ground up. So we kick of the post with the Park & Pic article:

This is Paul Todd’s Mach1 which has been restored using as much of the original car as possible, the paint job was done by the man himself. The car has had a set of our Magnum alloy rims on the car and they really suit it. The tyres are yet to be decided but that is just minor details. The subtle touch is the red centre caps to match the hood intakes!

The car needed a few minor additions and Yogi was seen prowling the premises and was collared into fitting some new wiper blades.

Customer Cars:

67 Fastback. Last week we showed you the poor state of the suspension arms that have now been replaced. This week Yogi has completed the under hood wiring loom and looks stock.

We are awaiting further instructions whether to continue with the rest of the restoration or hand the car back as she is, which was plan A. 🙂

The Onion Mustang

We start this update with a little selfie time that was uploaded to Facebook forum click here for the link. The guys getting stuck into the Onion and had a tea break feeling pleased with themselves.

The car has had the floor pans cut away, the front and the rear cabin sections. The Jig was custom-made by Yogi to make sure everything goes back at is should with the original factory jig holes being used. Now we can start to build her up layer by layer. Already she looks totally different.

The dash section was fine and will be used for the basis of the panel fit with the rear cabin section.

With the floor pan now out of the way, the new floor pan could be laid on the jig and married up to the jig and the existing parts.

A new sill was needed along with more metal work.

That leaves replacing the front inner metal work.

Off course none of this can be welded in place yet and is clamped and lightly tack welded just for now until we are happy with the measurements taken of the old parts. Watch this space to see how it all comes together.

WebShop Stock

We get asked now and again if we can get some Rostyle wheels for the early UK Fords. Well we listened and have a batch in stock. We have sold some already and have some left. Shall we keep them as stock or make this a one of batch? Let us know! These wheels we part of original kit for MGB, Rover and of course the early Fords. What we have here are the 15″ version and we love the look of the wheels.

Competition:

You only have a couple of hours to go before the competition deadline runs out. It’s not official this, so don’t tell Adam, but if you send them to mustangmaniacuk@gmail.com after the Midday cut off until this evening, I will sneak them onto the little stack on Adam’s desk.

Farewell & Fairlane

A busy week with a new arrival to the fleet, Adam decided he wanted something a little different from a Mustang. Before you ask, yes he still loves his Mustangs! We will start with the Park & Pic on this post which has turned out to be a popular section. thank you for the pictures been sent to us, please keep them coming as we now have another four cars lined up ready for the lead pic. This has to be done on a first come first sent basis, so if you have sent in a pic, we will use it, promise.

Jon O’Leary’s ’69 Fastback which he has only had for a few months now is this weeks lead pic. A couple of weeks ago we posted the shocks going on, the new exhaust and some work around the engine cooling. Jon picked her up and was well pleased with the transformation to his car’s handling. The car is now sporting a set of our Magnum 500 Alloy wheels and new tyres, the matt black and alloy work really well and suit the car perfectly. The car also had a set of our bespoke LED lights at the rear behind the stock lenses, a subtle and very safe upgrade we like to recommend.

Paul the Paint’s Mach1

The car is finished and ready for the road so we say farewell to this restoration project too. The only thing that remains to finish the car is the wheels and tyres. As yet these haven’t been decided, but the car can be driven and there is no immediate rush for the wheels and tyres. The car was assembled back together using as much of the original parts as possible, that was inside, under the car and under the hood.

Ford Fairlane 500 

Did you know:

The Ford Fairlane model was sold between 1955 and 1970, the name for this particular model was taken from Henry Ford’s estate, Fair Lane, near Dearborn, Michigan.

Adam’s new addition is this very original ’66 Fairlane. The car was a one owner with only 46,000 genuine miles on the clock. Adam decided to put a couple of upgrades on the car. That would be the LED lights front, which are side lights and indicators. The rear lights have the back up lights and the change to indicators when not in reverse. This set of LED’s are the only ones in the country like it and were custom-made. In fact Adam did say “Don’t ask!”

The car is a beauty to drive with disc brake conversion at the front with a pretty awesome bench front seat.

The 289 starts and runs beautifully now after Yogi had worked his magic on it.

Park & Pic

A much calmer week with projects being continued and some good ol’ maintenance on some cars instead of large projects. We also had an idea this week which was triggered by David Frost a customer of ours who took his ’66 Coupe out for a run down to us, just so he could spend some of his Birthday money with us. He took a photo of his car outside our offices and posted it on our Facebook Group Chat Page,”Mustang Maniacs,”click here for the link or the pic on the right menu. What was that little idea? We thought it would be a good idea when you bring your car down to us, take a photo outside with our sign, let us know and we will post it on the blog for you and add it to a “car autograph page” or “visitor” page if you like. If you have any old pics while you were with us that we can post for you, let us know with the date (if you want) and we will add it to the new section. Customers Cars:                        

We had a nice little black ’69 Fastback in Yogi’s workshop that needed the usual maintenance type stuff doing to it. We swapped the shocks out all round, new spring perches on the front and new twin exhaust from the manifolds back. A new radiator, thermostat and to check the head gasket too.

Gulf Stream Aqua’ 65 Coupe

Just quick update on this one, the decision was made to take of the vinyl stripes and spray the new ones on. this will mean no edges to feel on the paint when cleaning. Also the scoop will be sprayed to match the stripes and blend it all in. A little way to go still but progress is being made.

There has been plenty of work going on around the Lime Green Mach1, but most of that work is under and behind the dash as we tidy up of the loom work so far. There isn’t much to see at the moment in that respect which is why we haven’t posted any pics this week.
