Rollin’ On

We would like to thank our followers for some rather amusing response emails to the photos that were taken of Adam at the SEMA show. Some we couldn’t possibly put up on a family blog! We can answer a question that was answered a couple of times. Was that all the photos of other cars? Honestly, Yes that was all the photo’s Adam took of non Mustang Cars! While we are on the subject of SEMA 2017 we were sent this press release from Ford. (Thanks Gary.)

Quite an impressive record we must say. Congratulations to Ford.

Customers Cars:

The “Blue Racing Coupe” is now at a point where she is ready for road tests. The engine was wired up and plumbed in over the week.

With the engine all fired up and some base line setups made we could put the car panels back together again. The rear axle was replaced with a reconditioned as good as new 9″ version to do away with the welded up rear end that made the car a real handful to drive on normal roads as a result.

Not quite the race car she was turned into, but much more enjoyable to drive and will still be able to hold her own if somebody wants to try and race her.

’69 Mach1

Jacqui’s car has some temporary wheels on it now and can be rolled around the workshops as we need to now. This is always a big step as all the main running and steering gear has been fitted. The car’s paint job looks pretty cool out in the evening sun.

Andrew Hedley has done some nice charity work with is ’65 Coupe. He brought his car to us to sort out its “saggy bottom.” We have the before and after pictures his. New rear springs and shocks makes a massive difference to the car’s handling that’s for sure, as well as giving the car its aesthetically pleasing correct stance. Must be all that wine Andrew keep filling the trunk up with? 😉

A subtle difference, but what a difference!

Along For The Ride

Starting on Tuesday until the Friday next week is the annual SEMA 2017 show which Adam attends each year. However Adam tells us this is a chore and “Somebody has got to do it” suggesting that he doesn’t really want to go to fantastic city for the night life or being at America during the wonderful Halloween time. He also says that he has to go to a motor show and look around some pretty awesome and unique cars, innovative new parts and be distracted by some very pretty ladies promoting various companies products. After a stressful day he will be in need of some serious beers, not that we are jealous or anything of course. (Much). Seriously though Adam will not be back into the UK until the 14th November, he will have limited access to emails so please bear with us during this time.

Customer Cars:

We have the 69 Mach1 being worked on this week with the brakes and steering being fitted. The worthwhile upgrade for the cars is always the Borgeson power steering, and this little lady was getting just that along with a nice new shiny dual master cylinder and brake booster.

A new set of disc brakes to the front, no corners are cut here and even the bolts are sprayed silver to protect from rust and also for a little show.

The front suspension was replaced with nice new control arms, shocks and springs.

The brake pedal installed and connected up to the booster, followed by the top quality signature work from Yogi, his bespoke brake lines that are unmistakable and unique to each car.

All of a sudden the painted shell starts to look like a car again, from the outside just for now.

Convertible: 

Another suspension upgrade on a convertible. The suspension over the years starts to degrade at such a slow rate that you don’t realise until one day you think to yourself there is something wrong here. So another replacement shocks, springs front and rear, control arms and updated sway bar. The next time the owners gets in this car it will feel totally different. First the old stuff.

Then the new parts fitted.

The great debate. (Yes – it still rages on)

It seems the next announcement from the lunatic asylum that is the DVLA is that while cars over 40 years are no longer required an MOT – any classic car (which they call historic cars) over 40 years old, but has had its power-to-weight ratio increased by more than 15% will require MOTing and then be assigned a Q plate, which will stay with the car for life and can’t be removed. The complete madness in a few examples:

Scenario 1: changed the carb from a smokey old relic to a modern more fuel-efficient fuel injection system….MOT/Q

Scenario 2: change the stock cast iron heads and manifold to a more efficient aluminium set….bingo you have a double whammy as not only have you increased the power you have also reduced the weight – seriously altering the power-to-weight ratio…..welcome back to MOT and Q!

Scenario 3: 1930s Ford fitted with a 350/350…..forget it!

It now seems since this latest “idea” was made by people in the DVLA that know about these things, (who obviously have an IQ the same as the number of wheels on their own cars), have now relented and will will not pursue the ‘power to weight ratio increase’ exclusion in the MOT exemption process. While there might be some kit cars and some heavily modified vehicles that will still require an MOT, all other classics will not. This means that Mustangs that have been “improved” will still classify as historic. About time that somebody took a long look at what they are trying to achieve. Virtually nobody wanted this to change, so “If it ain’t broke – don’t fix it!”

The Jobsworth

We have been asked about a car we had with us at a recent car show, but we will get to that a little later along with a story about a “Jobsworth”, in other words, a somebody who had nothing better to do with their time other than enforce a petty rule. But we start again this week with the Park & Ride car on the post.

Park & Pic:

Derek has owned the car for a while now and has been gradually doing little jobs here and there on her. But after a look at the quality of work we do here, the car has been booked in with us to complete an ever extending list of upgrades and bit of under hood bling.

The Grinch:

This car is a real like it or loath it restoration or “Restomod” that took six years to complete by our very own Yogi including the awesome paint job, just before he joined our ranks at MM. We love this car it has to be said and is a rare and genuine S code 390GT with all matching numbers.

The modifications to the car are subtle and obvious at the same time. Under the hood there is no wire loom. The engine is ported out via a pair of ear drum busting Flowmasters that makes the big block V8 sound like it has a seriously bad attitude. The steering and suspension are total control setup, which is certainly required for this beast of a car.

The bodywork modifications are obvious at the rear with the well known Shelby look. The front cowl section has been removed and replaced with sheet metal to give the continuation of the hood to the glass. The rear vents have also been removed and plated up to give a smooth flowing line to the trunk lid.

Inside the quarter stick shift is automatic with a racing setup and it needs it. The sound system matches the engine and looks like the car.

Petty Rules?

Ken is Adam’s dad and still owns the very first Mustang that Adam restored before Adam’s passion had evolved into the trade leading Mustang Maniac company. The start of the story is that Adam bought his dad a set of number plates with the classic Playboy logo on them, after a bit of in joke while they visited Las Vegas over twenty years ago. The plates have been on the car ever since without a single problem.

Ken bought the car back down to Adam to have some new wheels on her along with a service at the same time. On way down from the Midlands, the local police constabulary decided to pull Ken over for his number plates. Obviously said individual had nothing better to do, like catching terrorists and murderers, oh no. They chase people for the serious crime of a logo on a registration plate. Nobody in the twenty years that they had been on the car has ever mentioned them before. So now the plates have been changed and Ken was left to feel like a criminal at the time. It’s not as though the car is driven for hundreds of miles everyday!

So we now have Ken’s official mug shot!

Another Prototype:

We have a one-off, bespoke, custom-made pair of smoked rear lenses. We had some clear ones made a little while ago and the reader poll showed us they were not as popular as we thought they would be, even though we sold the small stock we had. So now we now have something the opposite way around – smoked.

The question would be what do they look like in use? The video here shows you just that:

Take To The Floor

This week has been busy for the office with the phone ringing constantly, unfortunately most of the esquires again are around our stock levels. For the people who already know how Mustang Maniac Webshop works as an online part supplier, we can only apologise to bring this up again. We can only keep reiterating that if our WebShop says it’s “Currently in stock” then it certainly in stock there is no need to confirm by calling us. We completed a stock check only a month or so ago and we are fully itemised for accurate stock levels. Our invoice system will update the stock levels are updated instantly as we pick the parts from the shelves. So if the last item is picked before you order the part the it will show as ‘Currently out of stock’ then that item has been sold. Just refresh your browser to double-check before ordering. We hope that can allay your fears so your don’t need to call us and check.

Customers Cars:

Back to the cars more in particular the “BRC” (Blue Race Car). The car has now had the floor pan replaced, which is a critical part of the car for structure and how the car will eventually go back together again.

The floor pan was removed and there was a sigh of relief as the main chassis parts were in much better shape than we expected. This will save considerable time to refit the floor pan. The down side is some of the strengthening box sections were rotten and needed to be fabricated back into place. The side sills were in pretty good condition but only needed a little patch here and there certainly nothing much to worry about.

While the floor pan is out the main job is to protect the metal on the chassis, so the red oxide is out and all internal parts are given a good coat for protection.

The floor pan itself was the full pan and not the sections in this rebuild case, that means less welds and more cleaner metal all round.

The floor was then treated to yet more red oxide for internal protection.

With the pan allowed to dry and cure the seat bases were fitted into place.

With the major panel replaced and the floor coated that’s the main work completed for the middle section regarding the panels of course.

The rear section is the target for the next phase, we suspect there will be a fair amount of work to be done there as well.

Other Mustang News

Ford has introduced the retro-inspired ‘Pony Package’ for the 2018 Mustang EcoBoost.

Designed to give a nod to the nameplate heritage with its grille-mounted pony-in-corral badge design, the Pony Package also includes 19-inch polished aluminium wheels, bright belt line and window trim for the fastback model, premium carpeted floor mats with Ebony embroidered pony logo, side stripes on lower body sides, and tri-bar pony badge on rear deck lid appliqué.

The front badge is like the iconic Mustang logo from 50 years ago, surrounded in a chrome corral. The badge design first appeared in the mid-1960s and has appeared in various forms since, last used as part of an anniversary package for 2015.

The 2018 Ford Mustang heads to dealerships this October. Expect pricing for the Pony Package to be announced closer to the sports car’s launch later this year. Mustang Maniac are quite pleased to see the Corral back on the cars again. Part 2. – More rubber meets the road later this year when Ford expands the availability of electronic line-lock on 2018 Mustang. The track-exclusive feature – previously available only on V8-powered Mustang GT – will be standard on all pony cars, including those equipped with 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engines.

The feature is available with either the 10-speed SelectShift® automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

On models equipped with an available 12-inch, all-digital instrument display, drivers will see an industry-first, video-game-like animation of a spinning alloy wheel kicking up a cloud of smoke to indicate when the electronic line-lock feature is activated.

“Burnouts just never get old, no matter how old you are and how many times you’ve done them,” said Vaughn Gittin Jr., Formula Drift Champion. “Who would have thought that we would see an EcoBoost Mustang producing 15 seconds of fury like this? You’ve got to love these rad things Ford is doing.”

To introduce the new updates to the world, Vaughn randomly recruited pedestrians, (you really to have to watch the video to see the looks on their faces), in Southern California to join him at Irwindale Speedway, where he put them behind the wheel of a new Mustang to lay rubber.

Electronic line-lock is traditionally used by drag racers ahead of the starting line to heat up the tire rubber for improved traction when the start light goes green. The feature leverages state-of-the-art software technology that also allows amateur race car drivers, particularly those competing in bracket racing, to achieve more consistent performance times.

Using steering wheel-mounted thumb switches, a driver toggles through a menu on the instrument cluster to activate electronic line-lock. Once engaged, the system builds pressure on the front brake calipers. Another button press holds the pressure for up to 15 seconds, allowing the driver to hit the throttle and spin the rear wheels while the car stays in place.

“We introduced line-lock on EcoBoost Mustangs because we didn’t want those customers to miss out,” said Mark Schaller, Ford Mustang marketing manager. “The number of people choosing EcoBoost power continues to grow globally, and with the increased torque and new features coming on the new Mustang, customers will not be disappointed.”

Electronic line-lock is one of many changes fans will see when the newest version of the iconic pony car races into showrooms later this year, offering:

  • A sleeker design featuring a more athletic stance, with new front and rear end for a leaner, meaner look.
  • More advanced technology, including the available 12-inch, all-digital instrument cluster that can be customised, MyMode with memory function that remembers driving preferences, and new driver-assist features such as Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection for increased confidence behind the wheel.
  • Improved performance with powerful engine upgrades, plus an all-new available 10-speed automatic transmission for quicker shift times and improved fuel economy, as well as available MagneRide suspension for optimum handling, and available active valve performance exhaust for Mustang GT for more control.

We are pleased to see the new functions – only to be used responsibly of course. However, if you have enough power and know what you are doing, you don’t need line lock!  😉

eBay’s Mythical Motor

Here at Mustang Maniac we have often been involved with helping out the local community and our favourite charities. So when we heard about this project we felt that we must support and share it with you. This customised ’68 Mustang Coupe was transformed into a “unicorn” with parts and accessories sourced on eBay, along with the custom paint job to suit of course. All money raised from the auction will be going to The Albert Kennedy Trust, a charity tackling the crisis of homelessness amongst young LGBT community.

eBay’s mythical motor

Online marketplace takes ‘pride’ in unique car restoration.

To mark Pride 2017, eBay.co.uk will be revealing the transformation of a 1968 Ford Mustang Coupe into a ‘unicorn’ later this week. The mythical motor which will take part in the London Pride Parade celebrations on Saturday 8th July, will be sold afterwards on the online marketplace and all proceeds will go to the Albert Kennedy Trust. The charity supports young 16-25 year olds from the LGBT community who are homeless or living in a hostile environment.

The vehicle restoration which has taken 30 days and created from parts and accessories sourced on eBay, has been carried out by a skilled team of five; including mechanic and London Organiser Gay Classic Car Group Darren Sullivan Vince.

The project has involved upgrading the rear shocks and springs, installing a new radiator, hoses and water pump, fitting a new bonnet complete with unicorn horn, customised ‘unicorn’ lettering on the boot, and wings which are made from plastazote with a steel skeleton.

eBay spokesperson, Chris Gardner says: “At eBay we’re proud to celebrate all kinds of diversity, whether that’s the brilliant diversity of our society or the diversity available on site. It’s been great to be a part of this project where the LGBT community has come together for one purpose – to create this incredible unique car and raise money for a great cause. The Albert Kennedy Trust is a fantastic organisation, and eBay customers will have the option to donate at check out for the two weeks during Pride, as well as all of the proceeds from the sale of the ‘unicorn’ being donated to the charity.”

Darren says: “I’m thrilled to be part of a project that celebrates diversity, and it’s brilliant that eBay have chosen the Albert Kennedy Trust as their charity partner for this activity as I personally know friends who have been helped by this organisation during struggles in their life.”

Farewell & Fairlane

A busy week with a new arrival to the fleet, Adam decided he wanted something a little different from a Mustang. Before you ask, yes he still loves his Mustangs! We will start with the Park & Pic on this post which has turned out to be a popular section. thank you for the pictures been sent to us, please keep them coming as we now have another four cars lined up ready for the lead pic. This has to be done on a first come first sent basis, so if you have sent in a pic, we will use it, promise.

Jon O’Leary’s ’69 Fastback which he has only had for a few months now is this weeks lead pic. A couple of weeks ago we posted the shocks going on, the new exhaust and some work around the engine cooling. Jon picked her up and was well pleased with the transformation to his car’s handling. The car is now sporting a set of our Magnum 500 Alloy wheels and new tyres, the matt black and alloy work really well and suit the car perfectly. The car also had a set of our bespoke LED lights at the rear behind the stock lenses, a subtle and very safe upgrade we like to recommend.

We say farewell to this little lady for now. On another note (exhaust), we think we may just of heard the car going down the road!

Paul the Paint’s Mach1

The car is finished and ready for the road so we say farewell to this restoration project too. The only thing that remains to finish the car is the wheels and tyres. As yet these haven’t been decided, but the car can be driven and there is no immediate rush for the wheels and tyres. The car was assembled back together using as much of the original parts as possible, that was inside, under the car and under the hood.

Ford Fairlane 500 

Did you know:

The Ford Fairlane model was sold between 1955 and 1970, the name for this particular model was taken from Henry Ford’s estate, Fair Lane, near Dearborn, Michigan.

Adam’s new addition is this very original ’66 Fairlane. The car was a one owner with only 46,000 genuine miles on the clock. Adam decided to put a couple of upgrades on the car. That would be the LED lights front, which are side lights and indicators. The rear lights have the back up lights and the change to indicators when not in reverse. This set of LED’s are the only ones in the country like it and were custom-made. In fact Adam did say “Don’t ask!”

The car is a beauty to drive with disc brake conversion at the front with a pretty awesome bench front seat.

The 289 starts and runs beautifully now after Yogi had worked his magic on it.

Slow Processes

The week has been busy, but full of slow process with attention being paid to details. We have done some time consuming work Customer Cars, and some work on our YouTube Chanel. We will start as we always do with cars:

Customer Cars

1972 Lime Green Mach1

The car we are talking about here is the ’72 Lime Green  Mach1, or give it the correct colour name “Medium Lime” which was a 1972 only colour. The car has been put mostly back together now so we can drive her. The front end wire loom for the front lights was wrapped and installed. The difference is amazing as soon as the lights and grill are in place and working.

The engine bay was wired to the dash and the all important turn of the key spun her over and fired up. The starting is a little temperamental at the moment as the carb has not been adjusted properly yet. The point here was to make sure the electrics were correct and live as they are supposed to be. With the confirmation of the engine running the hood was bolted back in place, a two-man job as the hood on these cars is the best part of 6ft long and weighs accordingly.

This second pic we like as it’s slightly darker with a different front angle later in the day. The Sun was going down so we got a more moody or atmospheric looking Mach1. Sometimes these off the cuff snap shots are better than the more formal pics we take. So when we mention an “afternoon moody” we done mean Yogi being disturbed in his cave, we mean photographic atmospherics.

The car was driven out under her own power and left to run a little while to make sure the sensors and gauges were all working. There are a few more things to do yet which are more cosmetic, such as the side marker lights, adjusting the trunk now the weather strip is in place, engine tuning, carb set up, tracking brakes adjusted etc. We will take her for a quick drive down the road and back to settle the suspension in place with the tyres to check basic handling. When she comes back we do it all again to make sure everything has stayed where it should be. Then it will be taken for a proper drive to make sure everything is where we expect it to be and handles how she should. The rear on this car still has the air shock replacements from a good few years ago, obviously these will be set up to how Paul wants them to be for his preference and style of driving.

This next pic shows Yogi in the background, what he is in fact doing is checking the stance and overall look of the car from a distance.

Gulf Stream Aqua’ 65 Coupe

This car is still undergoing the slow exploration phase of rubbing down the problem areas to see exactly what needs to be dealt with. Here the left side top corner of the roof has been filled so it will need to be cleaned up and checked for any rust areas underneath.

The lower edges of the wheel arches can be a problem area if the drain away becomes blocked. The other classic spots for rust, the front edges at the bottom of the doors and the bottom of the front fenders.

We have our own YouTube Channel where we post clips and footage of various things, from new products and how they work, to a complete restoration in under 5 minutes. This is no easy task as the original 4000 or so photo’s were whittled down to still large number of 1200. Then the final collation of pics are used to make this slide show. Although this computer work isn’t working on cars, sifting through all those pictures in order for it all to make sense takes just as long.

We often get asked what is involved in a bare metal restoration. This short video is aimed at those type of questions which should give you a rough idea of the slow methodical process involved. What people don’t appreciate is the time involved to complete this particular project took four and a half years complete.
