Seen Better Days?

Here in the UK the sun is out and glorious weather for another week with the promise of more to come. We can safely say that we can’t remember seeing better days and a hot spell like this for many many years now. How long will be before the UK buckles under the strain of hot weather this time and not the snow? We moan about the rain, snow, fog, light, dark and now the country is moaning about the hot weather so it seems, but we are making the most of it when we can, tea breaks? Nope, more like Ice cold beer breaks, well not if we are driving of course. Moving on we have had another great set of holiday snaps with a Mustang and obviously they take the lead story of Park & Pic.

We have been sent a few pics from John Norris who had taken his ’67 convertible 302ci on a recent trip to Monaco. We (well me actually as I am writing the words), just love this pic and it sort of says it all really, my words will not do it justice unfortunately.

Customer Cars

We have had a great 66 Convertible in to us for a few handling issues. After inspection it turns out that springs and shocks required as they have certainly ‘seen better days’ should we say.

Comparisons of the old rear springs and the new when off the car is evident, but when the weight of the car goes back on the springs they just collapse even more, giving the normal ‘nose in the air look’ a whole new meaning. To give the car a more even stance the front was lowered by our high performance 1″ drop springs.

The new parts in place and with nice upgraded shocks compared to the old shocks.

There was also an issue with a leak around the diff pinion seal that was making a nice mess wherever it stood for any length of time. So while we were under the car we replaced that as well, another part that had perished away. The leak has now stopped we are glad to say.

The cost of all this certainly out ways the huge difference it will make to your drivability of the car, and safety of course.

Other News

Adam has taken down the trees that line the path to the yard which has widened the path and given a much more open feel to the area. However due to a few driving incidents that have been noted around a sharp corner. This has prompted Adam to get a new sign printed to warn other drivers what to look out for. Thanks to Lance at Linards for the design and prompt delivery. It seems as though some people just don’t get it!

WebShop

Adam has ordered in some more oil for the WebShop, and put Adam’s comment in a more family friendly way ‘I could have bought a cheap run around for what that pallet cost me’. Those who know Adam will be able to reverse engineer his comment to what he actually said. 😀

He purchased a 2017 Continental a little over a year ago and he bought a 1967 model at a recent Bonhams auction.  He says he loves both cars but has a sentimental connection to the older model.  That’s because the car was owned ever since it was brand new by Shelby’s grandfather, the legendary Carroll Shelby.

“I’m still trying to track down some of the details but I believe Ford gave it to him as a marketing vehicle.  I’ve got a copy of the registration tag that says, ‘Ford Motor Company Shelby’s Lincoln’ on it,” said Shelby, the eldest of the automotive icon’s six grandchildren.  “I thought it was something neat to have and to continue in the family.” The ’67 Continental was one of two dozen vehicles from Carroll Shelby’s personal collection put up for auction by his estate.  Shelby says he believes it held an important place in his grandfather’s heart. “He had so many vehicles over his lifetime that he bought and sold, and he didn’t seem to have much emotional attachment to any of them.  But for some reason, this car stayed in his ownership from day one,” said Shelby.  “It had to be something special that went back to his relationship with Ford I would guess.” The light blue Continental has only 61,000 miles on it, so it wasn’t driven much over the last 50 years.  Shelby says he plans to change that. “I’m going to drive it. That’s for sure,” he said.  “I’m not going to do any cross-country road trips, but my wife and kids are already excited about getting out and running around in it.” Shelby says the car is in good shape. “It runs well,” he said.  “There are a few small electrical things that need to get fixed but overall it’s been well maintained and it runs really nicely.” Shelby says he had to take measurements to make sure the vehicle would fit in his garage. “In today’s world it is a long car.  It’s 18.5 feet long,” he said.  “It fits in my garage but just barely.” When asked what he thought his grandfather would say about him buying the car, Shelby says he can imagine two potential responses.

“In one scenario I think he would just say what the heck are you buying an old car for,” chuckled Shelby, recollecting his grandfather’s sense of humor.  “At the end of the day I think he would be pretty happy about it because he didn’t keep a whole lot of things throughout his life.  He was always of the mantra that what’s new is better.  So I think he would be pleased to see this vehicle stay within the family.”

Shelby says he’s received a lot of compliments from his friends about both Continentals. “The one thing people say is that they both look fantastic,” he said.  “The new car is so well designed and the ’67 is just as striking.” Shelby says he was impressed with the 2017 Continental when he first saw it.  “I’m a banker by trade here in Dallas and I take clients out quite a bit so I wanted to have a car that’s comfortable,” he said.  “So I special ordered one and it came in early last year.  It’s been great.”

In addition to his work as a banker, Shelby serves on the board of Carroll Shelby International and often attends car shows and other events as a representative of the brand. “It’s one of the most fun things that I do. It’s great to be able to tell Carroll’s story,” he said.  “The part I have the most fun with is really listening to other people’s stories about when they met Carroll.  I knew him as a grandfather but I didn’t know him as well from a car enthusiast perspective when I was growing up.”

Bubbling Away

For the last couple of posts we have asked you to send us some pictures of your cars so we can post them for you on our little ol’ blog. We’re pleased to say that you have taken us up on our offer, so please keep them coming. We had an email from Alan Bullock. He sent us a few lines with his pictures:

In fact we like to think that the people who entrust their treasured cars to us have become more than just customers, they’ve also become our friends.

Customers Cars:

At Mustang Maniac we are never afraid to show the quality of our work and how we go about it all. Obviously we don’t show every single one of our little secrets, but we do show a lot of the processes. That way you know exactly what you are paying for. Last week we posted a repair of some rear quarter panels that had started to rust from the inside out. We received an email on what that would look like. We took some photo’s before hand of the metal worm in progress. A little bubble under the paint will often reveal a lot more than you expect.

We showed a number of months ago the work starting on a restoration on a gold convertible, that work has started up again and we are working on the inside now.

Car Shows:

We have a car at “The London Classic Car Show” in the Excel Centre. Adam loaned a car to the Mustang Owners Club stand, his much-loved Shelby KR. This is a picture of the car before the crowds all started to arrive on the Thursday this week. We will bring you some more pictures of the show. A Chilly Work Of Art:

We had this link sent to us and we thought that we would share it with you, especially if the weather is snowing where you are:

A Ford employee and Dearborn resident Jacob DiMaria’s creative snow sculpture isn’t your average snowman. 

 His creation – a 1965 Ford Mustang – took about 10 hours to construct Sunday and Monday after a big snowstorm in Metro Detroit. The sculpture is drawing lots of attention from his neighborhood, as well as from the Detroit Free Press and Channel 4 News. Reporters came out to his house to see the creation for themselves, and interview DiMaria and his wife Lizzie.

DiMaria said he and his siblings often made snow creations when they were kids and never really grew out of it. He built a little snow dog a few weeks ago on his back deck, but it was when his brother made a bear that he felt he had to step up his work. And so he turned to the Mustang. “I’ve always liked the ‘65 Mustang, plus the body lines were relatively easy to sculpt in snow,” he said. DiMaria, a technologist who has worked for Ford since July 2014, said his co-workers have gotten in on the fun, too, making many jokes. If it’s any reassurance to the design employees: DiMaria acknowledged that the car’s proportions are a little off – but it’s close. “It’s not perfect but it’s what it is,” he told the Free Press.

Mustang Manaic thinks that it’s pretty amazing, now who was it that said you can’t have fun in the snow?

We thought that we would like to continue on the theme of the Bullitt from last week, with this pretty amazing generosity for good causes, which didn’t get as much publicity as the original Bullitt car did, but we think this is well worth the mention.

DETROIT – Two of the most iconic American performance cars, a current generation Ford GT and the recently unveiled 2019 Mustang BULLITT, raised a total of $2.85 million for charity during the 47th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction. On Saturday, a 2017 Ford GT that was donated by Arizona businessman Ron Pratte to the Evernham Family-Racing for a Reason Foundation, sold for $2.5 million to benefit Autism Society of North Carolina. One hundred percent of the hammer price from the sale of the Ford GT will benefit the Autism Society of North Carolina’s IGNITE program.

Pratte, an entrepreneur and car collector, donated an additional $50,000 to benefit the Autism Alliance of Michigan, which works to make Michigan a better place to live for people with autism and their families, bringing the total dollars raised to a staggering $2.55 million.

On Friday, Ford and the McQueen estate donated VIN 001 of the limited-edition Mustang BULLITT, with 100 percent of the $300,000 hammer price benefiting Boys Republic.

“We were thrilled with the incredible amount of money raised for charity from the sale of a current generation Ford GT and our all-new 2019 Mustang BULLITT,” said Raj Nair, executive vice president and president, North America, Ford Motor Company. “Over the last several years, we’ve donated some incredible Ford Performance vehicles that have been sold to generate much-needed funds and awareness for deserving charities. It was a privilege to represent the Ford family on the auction block and combine our efforts with Ron Pratte and the McQueen Estate on the sale of these two incredible, rare and iconic Ford cars.” Ford also included a Ford Performance Racing School GT Experience with the auction of the Ford GT. This world-class program gives the winning bidder the chance to improve their driving skills behind the wheel of one of the world’s most celebrated supercars, while also supporting individuals with autism.

Ford and the McQueen estate offered VIN 001 of the 2019 Mustang BULLITT to benefit Boys Republic, a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian school and treatment community for troubled youngsters. One hundred percent of the $300,000 hammer price will go to the organization to help children find the resources and skills to build meaningful lives on their own.

The all new 2019 Mustang BULLITT recently made its debut at the North American International Auto Show. A prototype was shipped to Scottsdale where it was driven on the Barrett-Jackson block by Chad McQueen, the son of Hollywood star Steve McQueen.

“The Mustang BULLITT has been wildly popular since unveiling it in Detroit,” said Mark Schaller, Ford Mustang brand manager. “Both it and the Ford GT represent the pinnacle of Ford engineering, and design. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor the BULLITT’s heritage than donating the car to Boys Republic, which was instrumental in helping Steve McQueen become an iconic, Hollywood legend.”

Customers Cars:

Roy’s car is coming along very nicely with Yogi fitting the headliner which is a work of art in itself and looks amazing. Who let Yogi loose on the headliner? (In house joke here, don’t ask!)

Wiring has started to be prepped for the dash area and tidied up which again does take care and time to fit it all in without the loom getting in the way of the other parts, such as the wiper motor linkages, gauges, heater controls etc.

The doors now have the rubber seals in place and final adjustments can be made to the door closures.

We have the Mustang Maniac much sort after LED upgrades fitted behind the stock look tail lenses. We have to run extra cables to the main loom in order to make them work, so while we are at this stage it will all look perfect, wrapped up in our own stock look loom tape.

The end result is that coverted stock look combined with the modern high visibility LEDs as standard fitting on a lot of modern cars these days.

We are looking forward to this car being on the road as this will be a cracking looking little lady using as many of the original parts as we can.

Enfield Pageant 2017

We didn’t get to post last week as we said we were going to have a BBQ in the lovely sunny weather, but we did have the BBQ. Mustang Maniac were out n force at the Enfield Pageant of Motoring from 27th to 29th May. As always it’s a very well run show and logistic were great and no problems. Take note Duxford! Anyway, we had plenty of our cars and throughout the weekend customers joined us on various days so no two days were the same, but we will get to that a little later on. We also have a large update on the DeAgostini Shelby GT500 model too which will show you too.

Park & Pic

This weeks Park & Pic was from some good friends of ours Barry and Shaz who each own their own Mustangs. Shaz turned up in her ’69 302 fastback to pay us a social visit and pick up some parts for their other cars. Shaz also wanted us to point out that this is not Barry’s car, it’s hers! Yellow is a difficult colour on a car at the best of times, but these ’69 cars pull it off no problem what so ever. We should point out we heard them coming due to the decibel levels of the exhaust. 🙂

The Enfield Pageant 2017

We turned up early Saturday and set up shop, bringing with us our Fairlane, EcoBoost, Hertz to start of with and the john Wick car also turned up for the three days too. We also had a few visitors with their non Mustangs too, which we are always happy to see. throughout the weekend each day – we got rain. We can’t remember the last show where there was no rain over the whole weekend to be honest!

There was a strong American showing this year around the central tent.

There was nice showing of some great UK Fords so we tried to pick the ones we liked the best.

The rest of the cars would have taken up some much space on the post we tried to narrow it down from the two hundred plus photo’s we took over the weekend.

Throughout the weekend there was music and people doing daft things on motorbikes, but everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves as they do each year.

The reason for the down size was simple from Adam, “So, just let me get this straight, you want me to cut up one of my cars just so you can burn sausages in it? It ain’t happening.” That comment on reflection was a very, very fair point, and we can’t argue with actually. But, we will keep working on it though, we know where Adam’s secret graveyard stash of Mustangs are kept! 😉

The principles are exactly the same, it’s a chat room and chance to ask some questions of the many experts that have been there, done it or are doing it to their own Mustangs. Moving To All WebShop Ordering

Over the weekend at the Enfield Pageant we spoke to a lot of customers who came to see us and asked their opinions about the WebShop. With the very positive responses we were getting a decision was made, Mustang Maniac will be moving with the times and the internet age. It is our intention to make your parts ordering as simple and efficient as possible. In order to do that we are going to transition all our sales over to our WebShop ordering service. This is for a number of reasons;

  1. We are increasing our already extensive current Classic Mustang stock levels, as well as stocking some of the more common parts of the recent model Mustangs.
  2. When you click on the WebShop what you see “Currently in stock” that means we have that item on the shelves, no need to call us and check. The stock is instantly updated as soon as any item is purchased. If you ring us to ask if something is in stock, we check the item on the WebShop in exactly the same way as you do.
  3. The WebShop staff does not answer the phone as they are busy getting the daily deliveries ready and organising the stock. If they were to answer the phones, the deliveries could be delayed which isn’t acceptable for our customers. For instance today we have had 274 missed calls and the day isn’t over yet (4.30pm as we start to prepare this post). We missed the calls due to the fact that we had a big container delivery with three fully loaded pallets inside. All of those stock items have to be loaded onto the system to update the availability. Each item is then stored in location which could easily take a couple of days. That’s not an excuse, we are just realistic about the priorities at the time. If you have seen all of our stock locations then you will know what a big undertaking it is.
  4. Adam is now spending more of his time fixing, restoring, collecting, delivering and buying cars.
  5. Customers are ringing to ask how to do repairs and what parts they might need. Obviously this is virtually an impossible question to answer without seeing the car or even seeing the problem. To help with this we recently set up an email service which has been doing very well so far. Adam is often answering the emails in the evenings or where ever he is around the world at the time (literally). Please by all means send in your emails with pictures of the problem and as much detail as possible and we will do our best to get you the parts you need, even if you don’t know what you need. It’s so much easier than trying to explain it on the phone.
  6. No more messing around taking payments over the phone, the WebShop is fully automated.
  7. Order your parts where ever you are, sitting on a bus, train, or in a cafe having a coffee.
  8. Order day or night when it suits you, rather than being tied to our opening hours to place an order.

However, Mustang Maniac fully appreciates that you may not find exactly what you are looking for on the much bigger and new improved WebShop, We are pleased to say that we have also had limited number of the Scott Drake 2016 Retail Catalogues delivered to us this week, so if you wish to order a copy of the catalogue, email us via the WebShop and we will post one out to you while stocks last. The other much quicker alternative is to download the catalogue which will be added to the WebShop as soon as we can get it updated, hopefully by the end of the week. The office phones will not be redundant, they will be used for booking in the cars for a service, accident repairs, full restorations or part restorations etc. all of which by their very nature require a conversation prior to the vehicle arriving at the workshops.

We have had some calls to ask about the standard postage charges we use. One example is we were even asked if we can “nip down to the post office and post them to me so it makes it cheaper”. Unfortunately this isn’t a viable option for our business, by the time we drive to the Post Office which is six miles down the road, register the package and pay the postage you would only save about £3. That’s without our time and effort we could be putting too much better use elsewhere and all for a part that costs much less than the cost of the postage.

Most people already know this, we have various options to help out our customers who do not wish to pay the postal charges that we pass on to our customers;

  1. Make arrangements to call in and pick it up from our office.
  2. Make your own arrangements to have the parts collected and delivered to your location of choice.
  3. Rather than ordering the small amounts, order a larger package with couple more parts which would still cost the same, oil filter or spark plugs perhaps?

We are more than happy to do any of the above for you. We are confident that this will make things much easier for you to order what you need, and to get in contact with us. We do listen to you and hope you like the new process as it comes fully into operation. A big thanks to everybody who put up with our questions at the show.

A Mid Week Treat

Projects

The New Year chaos has settled down now and things are getting back to normal. The Pups have been requested yet again and we will put a few more pics up of them at the end of the post. But, as this is as Mustang based blog let’s get down to business with the cars.

Customer’s Cars:

Yogi has been busy working on the accident damaged 64 1/2 car. The engine was fitted back into the car and was plumed in and wired back up.

The whole front right corner was basically replaced with the chassis legs, fender, inner wing panels, radiator, lights, headlight mouldings and trims, bumper, front panels, various mountings, hinges, fixings etc.. the list goes on. But, what we have now is a superb looking classic 1964 1/2 Mustang. Our New Car Project:

We are aiming to bring you a complete build of a car with nothing but new parts. This will be a two-year project and we are looking forward to it. What is the car? It’s a Shelby GT500. We wished it could be a real one but this is going to be a 1:8th scale replica model from DeAgostini. Their advertising campaign that has started this week on national TV and press sees the start of the project. We have created a page under the Menu “Projects” where we will be adding pictures and process of the build as we go along as well as appearing on the blog as we go too on a monthly basis at least. Each issue will contain step by step build guides as well as articles on Mustang, Shelby, other muscle cars etc.

Yogi’s 1969 Mach1:

Yogi had his hibernation over Christmas and came back into the yard carrying bits that make him happy. Some would say that would be food or beer (which of course is always good). But the smile was because he had car bits, not any old car bits, some of these parts we haven’t had more than a day or so before he grabbed them. These are our custom-made LED ’69 rear lights with reflectors and the brand new smoked lenses we are now stocking that haven’t even been put onto the WebShop yet. Looks like we have sold them before we got the chance to sell them on if that makes sense.

Update: 12/1/2016

Thanks to Nathan who correctly pointed out that what we mean was the original style or look of the ’69 red lenses. The originals are darker than the these clearer style ones we have in stock as well. We are also thinking about getting some darker new styled red lenses as well if there is a demand for them. Please let us know if it’s what you are after, so in theory you could have four or so choices of ’69 lenses, orginal stock re, clearer red, smoked or darker red. Just for comparison.

We have been waiting for the delivery of our new stock look modern radios. These are an exact replica of the original fitted radios that have full modern capability. You can switch the radio frequencies between countries and there is even a BlueTooth version coming soon.
