California Dreamin’

Once in a while at Mustang Maniac we are pleasantly surprised by a car that comes into us for a little work. This week we have seen one of those rare occasions. This car was imported into the UK and was shipped straight to us for a once over, MOT and any little bits work that is needed.

We got this lady up on the ramps and could tell that this was a nice car with some proper money been spent on her. The underside was solid, clean and virtually rust free. There was no visible patches, holes or anything hidden that was going to cause us problems. Suspension parts had been changed, steering converted to a Borgson set up, new springs, disc brake conversion, wheels and tyres to name just some of the replacements.

The car was running, but needs a little Yogi magic and first things first was a service, now that would have been good if we could get oil in the car. Both the valve covers we closed versions and nowhere for the engine to vent or get oil in, so a nice set of chrome valves covers went on and a matching breather cap and pcv valve to the carb. Pertronix ignition was next up and all of a sudden things improved with the engine. We will sort out the timing and fine tuning later after a full diagnostics and road tests.

The rear leaf spring bushes had seen better days and needed a swap out, although they had changed the fronts with a poly set.

We were asked to swap out the rear LEDs for a new set of LEDs all round front and rear. There was nothing wrong with the old set except they were USA reds only. So when the indicators came on the lights flashed red as normal. So a Euro spec was added and the new accompanying wiring fitted to allow for the extra connections.

Both Adam and Yogi were amazed that the original light cluster screws were in place, a very difficult to get hold of part if at all.

A very nice little convertible import and a pleasure to tell the customer all is good with the basic structure of the car.

Customer Cars

While we are on the case of LEDs we have another car in for the same thing. These were working at the time we took the pics: The first are of and pic with the park lights now as side lights too.

We had to play around a little with the camera to try to take a pic of the LEDs as they never seem to come out right, so here are the front amber indicators, I think we shown the colours OK.

The rears again didn’t come out brilliant on the pics, but they are super bright. Red drive lights and the amber indicators.

We thought that we would like to continue on the theme of the Bullitt from last week, with this pretty amazing generosity for good causes, which didn’t get as much publicity as the original Bullitt car did, but we think this is well worth the mention.

DETROIT – Two of the most iconic American performance cars, a current generation Ford GT and the recently unveiled 2019 Mustang BULLITT, raised a total of $2.85 million for charity during the 47th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction. On Saturday, a 2017 Ford GT that was donated by Arizona businessman Ron Pratte to the Evernham Family-Racing for a Reason Foundation, sold for $2.5 million to benefit Autism Society of North Carolina. One hundred percent of the hammer price from the sale of the Ford GT will benefit the Autism Society of North Carolina’s IGNITE program.

Pratte, an entrepreneur and car collector, donated an additional $50,000 to benefit the Autism Alliance of Michigan, which works to make Michigan a better place to live for people with autism and their families, bringing the total dollars raised to a staggering $2.55 million.

On Friday, Ford and the McQueen estate donated VIN 001 of the limited-edition Mustang BULLITT, with 100 percent of the $300,000 hammer price benefiting Boys Republic.

“We were thrilled with the incredible amount of money raised for charity from the sale of a current generation Ford GT and our all-new 2019 Mustang BULLITT,” said Raj Nair, executive vice president and president, North America, Ford Motor Company. “Over the last several years, we’ve donated some incredible Ford Performance vehicles that have been sold to generate much-needed funds and awareness for deserving charities. It was a privilege to represent the Ford family on the auction block and combine our efforts with Ron Pratte and the McQueen Estate on the sale of these two incredible, rare and iconic Ford cars.” Ford also included a Ford Performance Racing School GT Experience with the auction of the Ford GT. This world-class program gives the winning bidder the chance to improve their driving skills behind the wheel of one of the world’s most celebrated supercars, while also supporting individuals with autism.

Ford and the McQueen estate offered VIN 001 of the 2019 Mustang BULLITT to benefit Boys Republic, a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian school and treatment community for troubled youngsters. One hundred percent of the $300,000 hammer price will go to the organization to help children find the resources and skills to build meaningful lives on their own.

The all new 2019 Mustang BULLITT recently made its debut at the North American International Auto Show. A prototype was shipped to Scottsdale where it was driven on the Barrett-Jackson block by Chad McQueen, the son of Hollywood star Steve McQueen.

“The Mustang BULLITT has been wildly popular since unveiling it in Detroit,” said Mark Schaller, Ford Mustang brand manager. “Both it and the Ford GT represent the pinnacle of Ford engineering, and design. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor the BULLITT’s heritage than donating the car to Boys Republic, which was instrumental in helping Steve McQueen become an iconic, Hollywood legend.”

Mustang Maniac thinks that this is an amazing achievement and collaboration from all those involved.

Customers Cars:

Roy’s car is coming along very nicely with Yogi fitting the headliner which is a work of art in itself and looks amazing. Who let Yogi loose on the headliner? (In house joke here, don’t ask!)

Wiring has started to be prepped for the dash area and tidied up which again does take care and time to fit it all in without the loom getting in the way of the other parts, such as the wiper motor linkages, gauges, heater controls etc.

The doors now have the rubber seals in place and final adjustments can be made to the door closures.

We have the Mustang Maniac much sort after LED upgrades fitted behind the stock look tail lenses. We have to run extra cables to the main loom in order to make them work, so while we are at this stage it will all look perfect, wrapped up in our own stock look loom tape.

The end result is that coverted stock look combined with the modern high visibility LEDs as standard fitting on a lot of modern cars these days.

We are looking forward to this car being on the road as this will be a cracking looking little lady using as many of the original parts as we can.

Rollin’ On

We would like to thank our followers for some rather amusing response emails to the photos that were taken of Adam at the SEMA show. Some we couldn’t possibly put up on a family blog! We can answer a question that was answered a couple of times. Was that all the photos of other cars? Honestly, Yes that was all the photo’s Adam took of non Mustang Cars! Quite an impressive record we must say. Congratulations to Ford.

Customers Cars:

The “Blue Racing Coupe” is now at a point where she is ready for road tests. The engine was wired up and plumbed in over the week.

With the engine all fired up and some base line setups made we could put the car panels back together again. The rear axle was replaced with a reconditioned as good as new 9″ version to do away with the welded up rear end that made the car a real handful to drive on normal roads as a result.

Not quite the race car she was turned into, but much more enjoyable to drive and will still be able to hold her own if somebody wants to try and race her.

’69 Mach1

Jacqui’s car has some temporary wheels on it now and can be rolled around the workshops as we need to now. This is always a big step as all the main running and steering gear has been fitted. The car’s paint job looks pretty cool out in the evening sun.

Andrew Hedley has done some nice charity work with is ’65 Coupe. He brought his car to us to sort out its “saggy bottom.” We have the before and after pictures his. New rear springs and shocks makes a massive difference to the car’s handling that’s for sure, as well as giving the car its aesthetically pleasing correct stance. Must be all that wine Andrew keep filling the trunk up with? 😉

Cunning As A Fox

The week started of very well with the arrival of the freshly painted ’69 back from the paint shop, the down side is we needed to make room for her as all the spaces we had lined up were all taken with mostly service type of work this week. We promised last week that there would be an update on the Fox body LED conversion we have bespoke, one-off, custom-made from the ground up, or perhaps we should call it the mark 1 version for now.

This ’66 Coupe is owned by Adam D. who has only had this little lady for a number of weeks. Adam bought this car in to us the previous weekend for a look over as he wasn’t sure what to make of her. So both the Adams took her out for a road test and the verdict was made. She was booked in with us during the week for a good old sort out and little loving care that ONLY Mustang Maniac can provide.

The car was running a little rough on her very first visit, so we had an impromptu air filter change and a default setting carb tuning, all on a Saturday morning while the mandatory cup of tea was to be had. So if the phones were not being answered – here is a perfect example why.

Once we had the car in this week, we could have another good look over her, the car is not in a too bad at all and quite clean underside. The main concern was that the front drum brakes had been converted to a discs, nothing wrong with that of course. But, there is a problem when the conversion was left with the original single pot master cylinder and booster in place. As a result there was not enough back pressure to keep the pads from dragging on the discs. As a result this was slowing the car down, using more fuel to get going and making things hot. You can see the old single pot master cylinder here at the back right which should be a dual version with disc brakes.

There was a smell of petrol from the back and it was obvious that the fuel tank had a crease in it, from what looks like it was backed over something, which was in turn seeping fuel slowly, and certainly required a new one. The car was up on the ramps fuel tank was swapped out, and the work started on the master cylinder change over to the correct dual cylinder that should be used, the brakes were bleed and properly adjusted all round. The brake pedal was adjusted to the new cylinder push rod. This in turn highlighted the hand brake that was also needing adjusting correctly now too. The car had a little quirk where the gear shifter needed a little wiggle to start and the transmission lever would not stay in Park. The safety cut out and the transmission selector lever connected correctly and adjusted, tested and all was now fine. Next up to be sorted out was the engine running, starting with the spark plugs out and the new ones gapped and refitted. Holley default settings were dialled in and the fine tuning started from there. The timing was out and needed resetting which helped a great deal for the initial running and idling. Next was the air/fuel mixture carb settings, Yogi demonstrated his dark art of engine tuning by feel, response and sound. It’s OK setting the mixtures to “what the book of words says”, but, “if it doesn’t run right what’s the point? All engines are different,” said the bear. Once the engine was now the best it could be for the garage setup, it was time for a full road test. The car came back with a small list of final tweaks for the carb setting under load, and that the speedo was reading 10mph to slow which required a new speedo gearing to fix that. The brakes were now spot on and bedding in nicely, but now we had a little wheel balancing to do to get rid of the wobble at speed. Another road test and all was good in the retest.

In fact the Owner Adam D. sent us a pretty awesome email, as he was well pleased. I’m sure he won’t mind sharing this little clip with you;

“The work that you guys at Mustang Maniacs have done on the car was phenomenal – differences you have made since you got it and did a couple of days work, pulls and accelerates noticeably better – absolutely beautifully and even sounds better.  The brakes also seem to work so much better and it handles and steers so so much better in the bends and straight – no more steering wobble or unnoticeable !!! Petrol consumption is also so much better – really very noticeable indeed.”

We are pleased that we have another happy customer who can really enjoy their car which is just how it should be.

Fox Body LEDs

We promised this last week so here it is; A new acquisition Fox Body Mustang was bought into us, the requirement was to have some flashing amber LEDs to make it UK road legal keeping the stock look of the lenses. Now we don’t have a ready-made kit for that, so it was time for Adam and Yogi to design and make a bespoke set of LEDs. The guys are keeping this one a secret on how they done it for now, so there is no circuit boards allowed to be shown, but we can show you the results.

The rear assemblies were taken apart to expose the lenses. We think they look great.

Before the custom Mustang Maniac Fox lights were fitted they were tested off the car and here is that test.

The owner is one very happy chap too.

’69 Rebuild New Paint

We have had a bare metal respray back from the paint shop and now ready for that rebuild. There is just something magical watching a car unloaded with her new paint. This is going to be a cracking looking car once she is done!

But before we can start work on her – we need to clear a couple of cars out first. We are looking forward to this build.

Euro Update

If you are thinking by the heading that Mustang Maniac are going to talk politics, you are very wrong. We are pleased to announce that we have some new stock for a European look upgrade to our popular custom-made LED lighting kits. But first we start with the Park & Pic.

This Coupe owned by Steve has had a little upgrade on the front suspension. Steve supplied us with the wheels and the tyres so we could set the geo up on the car after the suspension swap out.

First out was the was the old springs, shocks and perches removed which have seen better days regarding wear and tear.

The perches had the upgraded Shelby suspension springs which are stiffer and lower the front of the car a little to give that more neutral body stance. The front sway bar was upgraded to a 1″ bar which will improve the handling of the car no end with the new performance springs and shocks.

Farewell & Fairlane

A busy week with a new arrival to the fleet, Adam decided he wanted something a little different from a Mustang. Before you ask, yes he still loves his Mustangs! We will start with the Park & Pic on this post which has turned out to be a popular section. thank you for the pictures been sent to us, please keep them coming as we now have another four cars lined up ready for the lead pic. This has to be done on a first come first sent basis, so if you have sent in a pic, we will use it, promise.

Jon O’Leary’s ’69 Fastback which he has only had for a few months now is this weeks lead pic. A couple of weeks ago we posted the shocks going on, the new exhaust and some work around the engine cooling. Jon picked her up and was well pleased with the transformation to his car’s handling. The car is now sporting a set of our Magnum 500 Alloy wheels and new tyres, the matt black and alloy work really well and suit the car perfectly. The car also had a set of our bespoke LED lights at the rear behind the stock lenses, a subtle and very safe upgrade we like to recommend.

Paul the Paint’s Mach1

The car is finished and ready for the road so we say farewell to this restoration project too. The only thing that remains to finish the car is the wheels and tyres. As yet these haven’t been decided, but the car can be driven and there is no immediate rush for the wheels and tyres. The car was assembled back together using as much of the original parts as possible, that was inside, under the car and under the hood.

Ford Fairlane 500 

Did you know:

The Ford Fairlane model was sold between 1955 and 1970, the name for this particular model was taken from Henry Ford’s estate, Fair Lane, near Dearborn, Michigan.

Adam’s new addition is this very original ’66 Fairlane. The car was a one owner with only 46,000 genuine miles on the clock. Adam decided to put a couple of upgrades on the car. That would be the LED lights front, which are side lights and indicators. The rear lights have the back up lights and the change to indicators when not in reverse. This set of LED’s are the only ones in the country like it and were custom-made. In fact Adam did say “Don’t ask!”

The car is a beauty to drive with disc brake conversion at the front with a pretty awesome bench front seat.

The 289 starts and runs beautifully now after Yogi had worked his magic on it.
