Two Outta Three

This week we have some rather unusual problems a couple which are self-inflicted and the other not as much, so we thought that we would share these with you as two are potentially dangerous.

Harmonic Dampener.

This issue was a broken bolt failure some time in the past which was still in place on the harmonic balancer itself. The question is was the bolt over tightened and the bolt sheared, or was it corroded in place and sheared trying to undo it. Either way it was refitted with just two bolts.

We could see the problem with the pulley of before we even removed the dampener but we had to remove it. To put it nicely is that the dampener is in a bad way. We of course can’t comment on why or what the reasoning was to fit the pulley back with two bolts was at the time. There are three bolts fitted for a reason by the designers of the engines. As Meatloaf would sing; ‘Two outta three ain’t bad’.

We could replace it which would be our preference, but we have been asked to try to sort this one out. It looks like an attempt had been started and was not central for drilling the bolt. This could cause issues with balance if we have to re-tap the hole. But, we shall see how it goes one we start. We mention dangerous on this one as the two remaining bolts are obviously taking more stress than they should do, metal fatigue could cause the bolts to fail which could cause damage to the crank shaft, or even allow the main pulley to rip from the dampener, thus causing damage within the engine bay to who knows what at 4,000rpm!

Steering Conversion

We have fitted so many steering conversions to cars we have lost counts and is almost an automated exercise. But to save costs some people buy the kits from us and fit them themselves. No harm in that of course providing you have the will and time to do it. However if you are in any doubt – DON’T do it yourself. We sell tens of these kits a year with no problems, we fit most of them but this car that came into us made us do a double take. The Borgeson kit was incorrectly fitted by the looks of it. For a critical part of the car where you aim where you are intending to go it needs to be right. If this steering mechanism fails you are in for a whole heap of hurt, firstly to the wallet and car if you have an accident, that of course is going on the assumption the driver is not hurt either. We will of course sort this out and fix it properly with a couple of road tests just to be sure.

Please be careful of the ‘There’s a bloke down the pub that does a bit of mechanical work at the weekends for a few quid’ scenario. Sometimes failures like this can be lethal, if not, at least creating issues elsewhere that may well cost you a lot more in the long run.

Rust

There are particular areas that the older Mustangs tend to rust, rear quarters, cowls, chassis legs etc. But we have come across this very unusual place for rut, the underside of the hood in the corners, the top side is fine.

We will have to strip this back to see if it’s a repair or replacement depending on budget once we know what we are dealing with.

One-off Mustang

A special one-of-a-kind Kona Blue 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt made its debut Friday at the Woodward Dream Cruise, but it won’t be for sale. Like the other 2019 Mustang Bullitt cars, the Kona Blue version features a performance-tuned 5.0-liter V-8 capable of producing 480 horsepower.

However, it also comes with unique gray wheels and blue cabin stitching, as well as unique side scoops on the rear windows. The 2019 Mustang Bullitt is typically available in only Dark Highland Green and Shadow Black. “If you look at the tone and color of Kona Blue, it’s really dark,” said Mustang brand manager Mark Schaller. “It fits with the overall design scheme of the car. You want it to be understated. You don’t want loud, bright colors. You want something dark and stealthy.” The Kona Blue Bullitt was on display at Mustang Alley during the dream cruise. The car will now make other appearances at events such as the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) in Las Vegas.

Tickets for the raffle, which benefits Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), are $10 at locations where the Kona Blue Bullitt will be on display and many Ford buildings on the Dearborn campus. A winner will be selected Nov. 13. “There’s been an overwhelmingly positive response to the 2019 Mustang Bullitt,” Schaller said. “This is the way it can give back to a good cause and at the same time carve out a small niche where there is the unique one-of-one car out there driving around that helps add to the collectability of the car in the long run.” As many as 60,000 tickets will be sold for the raffle. The first 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt was auctioned for charity in January, raising $300,000 for Boys Republic, a nonprofit school and treatment community for troubled youngsters which actor Steve McQueen attended prior to becoming an icon behind the wheel of a 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback in the film “Bullitt.”

Over the years the Ford Mustang has worn several special edition paint colors since its launch. The latest being the Kona Blue Mustang Bullitt as we mentioned above. Here is a little list that we have found for the limited edition colour Mustangs. Have we missed any?

Ok so the title is a little play on words for this week’s blog, but the weather in the UK is picking up a little and looking forward to the warm weather and all the classic cars coming out to play. We said a play on words as this weeks Park & Pic is a car we still have with us after a service and a good look over. The ’65 Springtime yellow coupe is owned by our friend and customer Mick.

The car is solid and the best bit? It’s up for sale! NOw Adam doesn’t “Sell” cars, he will take money for them if somebody has the right amount of cash for it. So this is not a regular feature to sell cars on our little ol’ blog, but if you are interested email us via the WebShop and they will put you in touch with the owner. No tyre kickers obviously.

The car has a great paper trail of the work completed on her over the years and always adds provenance to a classic car.

The engine is a nice little head turner too and runs as well as it looks.

Customer Cars

The Golden convertible has had some attention this week on the interior and has taken some great steps forward. The carpet has been fitted and the seats have gone back in. The dash area and wire pigtail have taken a little work but they are now fitted fine.

The external fittings are starting to come together and it’s amazing how a couple of shiny bits can make a difference.

The Transmission mounts were in a less than desirable condition should we say, and no we can’t use Yogi’s description of the part as this is a family blog! The replacement has been fitted in place and should make a huge difference to the driveability of the car.

Happy Birthday to….

The Ford Mustang of course, well not just yet, on Tuesday 17th April to be precise where the Mustang will be Fifty Four years old! We owe a big thanks to our good buddy Gary aka “Boris” (don’t ask), for coming up with some great little facts for us;

1) Ford US built 8160 Mustangs up to April 16, the day before launch – enough for one per dealer.

2) Ford planned to increase production through 1964, but due to the reaction at launch built another 16,000 Mustangs for the balance of April 1964.

3) Ford dealers took 22,000 orders at launch and sold well over 400,000 in the first year.

4) Ford had initially planned to sell 150-180,000 Mustang a year.

5) The following generations continued to be successful, but it was considered that the “Fox” bodied cars were somehow less successful. This is not true as they sold more than 400,000 units in the first year beating the original Mustang’s score.

6) The ‘father of Mustang’ Lee Iacocco was fired by Henry Ford 2 much later because of two reasons – he wanted to produce lots of small front wheel drive cars…and it is thought that he was becoming more prominent within Ford than ‘Hank the Deuce’.

7) Henry famously said when pressed by the Board of Directors of Ford on the firing of Iacocca; “sometimes you just don’t like somebody”.

8) The legendary “Bullitt” car now also becomes a member of the coveted “fifty years old club” too.

We thought that we would like to continue on the theme of the Bullitt from last week, with this pretty amazing generosity for good causes, which didn’t get as much publicity as the original Bullitt car did, but we think this is well worth the mention.

DETROIT – Two of the most iconic American performance cars, a current generation Ford GT and the recently unveiled 2019 Mustang BULLITT, raised a total of $2.85 million for charity during the 47th Annual Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction. On Saturday, a 2017 Ford GT that was donated by Arizona businessman Ron Pratte to the Evernham Family-Racing for a Reason Foundation, sold for $2.5 million to benefit Autism Society of North Carolina. One hundred percent of the hammer price from the sale of the Ford GT will benefit the Autism Society of North Carolina’s IGNITE program.

Pratte, an entrepreneur and car collector, donated an additional $50,000 to benefit the Autism Alliance of Michigan, which works to make Michigan a better place to live for people with autism and their families, bringing the total dollars raised to a staggering $2.55 million.

On Friday, Ford and the McQueen estate donated VIN 001 of the limited-edition Mustang BULLITT, with 100 percent of the $300,000 hammer price benefiting Boys Republic.

“We were thrilled with the incredible amount of money raised for charity from the sale of a current generation Ford GT and our all-new 2019 Mustang BULLITT,” said Raj Nair, executive vice president and president, North America, Ford Motor Company. “Over the last several years, we’ve donated some incredible Ford Performance vehicles that have been sold to generate much-needed funds and awareness for deserving charities. It was a privilege to represent the Ford family on the auction block and combine our efforts with Ron Pratte and the McQueen Estate on the sale of these two incredible, rare and iconic Ford cars.” Ford also included a Ford Performance Racing School GT Experience with the auction of the Ford GT. This world-class program gives the winning bidder the chance to improve their driving skills behind the wheel of one of the world’s most celebrated supercars, while also supporting individuals with autism.

Ford and the McQueen estate offered VIN 001 of the 2019 Mustang BULLITT to benefit Boys Republic, a private, nonprofit, nonsectarian school and treatment community for troubled youngsters. One hundred percent of the $300,000 hammer price will go to the organization to help children find the resources and skills to build meaningful lives on their own.

The all new 2019 Mustang BULLITT recently made its debut at the North American International Auto Show. A prototype was shipped to Scottsdale where it was driven on the Barrett-Jackson block by Chad McQueen, the son of Hollywood star Steve McQueen.

“The Mustang BULLITT has been wildly popular since unveiling it in Detroit,” said Mark Schaller, Ford Mustang brand manager. “Both it and the Ford GT represent the pinnacle of Ford engineering, and design. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor the BULLITT’s heritage than donating the car to Boys Republic, which was instrumental in helping Steve McQueen become an iconic, Hollywood legend.”

Customers Cars:

Roy’s car is coming along very nicely with Yogi fitting the headliner which is a work of art in itself and looks amazing. Who let Yogi loose on the headliner? (In house joke here, don’t ask!)

Wiring has started to be prepped for the dash area and tidied up which again does take care and time to fit it all in without the loom getting in the way of the other parts, such as the wiper motor linkages, gauges, heater controls etc.

The doors now have the rubber seals in place and final adjustments can be made to the door closures.

We have the Mustang Maniac much sort after LED upgrades fitted behind the stock look tail lenses. We have to run extra cables to the main loom in order to make them work, so while we are at this stage it will all look perfect, wrapped up in our own stock look loom tape.

The end result is that coverted stock look combined with the modern high visibility LEDs as standard fitting on a lot of modern cars these days.

We are looking forward to this car being on the road as this will be a cracking looking little lady using as many of the original parts as we can.

Bullitt(s) Old & New

This weeks post is a little longer than normal but we think it deserves it. Unless you have been under a rock for the last couple of weeks there has been an explosion of media around the legendary ’68 Bullitt Mustang and the special edition which Ford have released to commemorate the fifty years since the film. After the Bullitt article we have compiled there is our exciting news about our latest delivery we promised last week.

DETROIT – Celebrating the 50th anniversary of iconic movie “Bullitt” and its fan-favorite San Francisco car chase, Ford introduces the new cool and powerful 2019 Mustang Bullitt.

Third-generation member of the McQueen family, Molly, starred in a special movie of her own introducing the new third-generation Bullitt at the North American International Auto Show. In the film, Molly races a new Mustang Bullitt through a parking structure battling a Dodge Charger for the final free space.

Helping it win that particular spot was the Bullitt’s upgraded 5.0-liter V8 engine that will deliver at least 475 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, pushing the new Bullitt to a top speed of 163 mph – an 8 mph increase versus the latest Mustang GT.

Special Edition

As a special-edition model due out this summer – the all-new Mustang Bullitt is equipped with a manual transmission, and the gear shifter features a white cue ball shift knob as a nod to the original. The vehicle packages all Mustang GT Premium and Performance Package content into a vehicle that maintains the original Bullitt’s understated persona. An active valve performance exhaust system is standard with new Black NitroPlate exhaust tips, and retuned to give the car a signature burble, as well as new Open Air Induction System and Shelby GT350 intake manifold with 87mm throttle bodies and powertrain control module calibration for optimal performance.

Other standard equipment includes a heated leather steering wheel and a 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument cluster, identical in function to the cluster introduced on 2018 Mustang, but with a unique Bullitt welcome screen that starts in green with an image of the car rather than the pony.

“This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool,” said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. “As a designer, it’s my favorite Mustang – devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything – it’s just cool.” Exterior paint choices are limited to Shadow Black and the classic Dark Highland Green – as worn in the movie. Other features that pay tribute to the car McQueen drove are subtle chrome accents around the grille and front windows, classic torque thrust 19-inch aluminum wheels, red-painted Brembo brakes, and a unique black front grille. Inside and out, the vehicle uses minimal body badging; only the circular faux gas cap Bullitt logo on the rear center is visible on the exterior.  The leather-trimmed interior features unique green accent stitching on the dashboard, door panels, center console and seats.

Aside from the two exterior paint choices, Mustang Bullitt buyers are limited to three factory-installed options:

  • Bullitt Electronics Package includes navigation, driver memory seats and mirrors, upgraded sound system and Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert that can alert customers of vehicles detected in difficult-to-see places
  • MagneRide® semi-active suspension system optimizes driving performance
  • RECARO® black leather-trimmed seats

“When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have,” said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer. “It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be bad ass.” That reputation was born after a Mustang GT fastback played a prominent role in the 1968 movie, and most notably in a chase scene that set new standards in filmmaking. The film’s nearly 10-minute-long sequence followed McQueen chasing down two hitmen in his Mustang through the streets of San Francisco.

The Original

Two identical 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks were used in the filming of the classic Warner Bros. movie “Bullitt” that debuted in theaters on Oct. 17, 1968. After filming, the cars went their separate ways: the hero vehicle driven by McQueen in the movie was sold by Warner Bros. to a private buyer, and the other – used in many of the jumps during the famous chase scene – was sent to a salvage yard. That jumper vehicle resurfaced in Baja, California, in early 2017, but the other was lost to history. Until now; Sean Kiernan, owner of the hero vehicle, inherited the car in 2014 from his late father, Robert, who had purchased the vehicle in 1974. To fulfill his family’s lifelong dream, Sean contacted Ford and the two parties worked together to reveal his movie star car alongside the all-new 2019 Mustang Bullitt at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. “You know, it was never our intention to keep this car a secret from everybody,” Sean said. “It just kind of happened with life. I’m just completely buzzing to join with Ford and the new Bullitt and show this car to the world on one of the biggest stages there is.”

Do we want one – Yep, we do!

As is often the case with these things, the reappearance of the Bullitt Mustang was no coincidence. Current owner Sean Kiernan explained to Jay Leno that he and Ford “found each other” and worked together to stage the car’s comeback. Kiernan’s father, Robert Kiernan Jr., bought the car in 1974 after seeing an ad in Road & Track for a “Bullett” Mustang. He was the only one who inquired, and got the car for $6,000. That was actually a lot of money for a used 1968 Mustang in 1974.

In 1977, McQueen wrote a letter to Robert Kiernan Jr., asking for the opportunity to “get back my ’68 Mustang.” As documented by classic-car insurer Hagerty, McQueen said he wanted to keep the car unrestored, as it had appeared in Bullitt, which he said was “simply personal.” But McQueen was only willing to go so far in getting the Mustang back. While he did offer to pay for a replacement car (the Kiernans were using the Bullitt Mustang as a daily driver), McQueen noted that he would do so as long as “there is not too much monies involved in it.”

The Bullitt Mustang was eventually retired from daily use and rolled into a garage. Meanwhile, the rest of the world assumed that it was simply lost. Spurred by Ford’s decision to launch special-edition Mustang Bullitts in 2001 and 2008, Sean Kiernan and his father intended to rebuild the car and share it with the public, but life got in the way. The senior Kiernan died in 2014, before the car was finished. Today, the Bullitt Mustang is in drivable condition, but remains unrestored. Note that this is one of two Mustangs used to film the movie. Coincidentally, the other car was found in Mexico last year. That car had been stripped of many parts and had some restoration work done, making it less original than Kiernan’s car. Kiernan has no plans to sell, but his Mustang is nonetheless incredibly valuable. Hagerty CEO McKeel Hagerty estimates the car could fetch around $4 million, noting that two other iconic television and movie cars, the original Batmobile and James Bond Aston Martin DB5, sold for similar amounts. There are also plans for a film on the Bullitt Mustang. This time, the car will probably be handled a bit more gingerly than the last time it was on-screen.

Do we want this car? Yep we need this car.

WebShop

We promised last week that we would have an update on the delivery we have been waiting many months for now. It arrived as expected and took the day to move it all around. Adam has FOUR ’68 shells delivered to the yard. Couple full shells and a couple in parts. All of which are now stored in the own special location.

A couple of these have already earmarked for in-house projects and the others Adam bought for “something or other!” Now those that know Adam also know that he never actively sells a car, but if you offer him the right money he might consider it, as he can often be heard to say “It could be yours!” As for these body shells and kits? Who knows, like the second-hand parts – “nope, ‘aint got none of them either!”

Customers Cars:

Roy has his car with us now from the paint shop and Yogi has started the brand new wire loom fitting and putting some glass in. Once the glass is in the project starts to look like a car again.

On top of that the engine has been worked on, new valves, seats and guides with all new engine internals. The heads have been skimmed and the block decked so this 351Windsor should be factory fresh too.

Classic Bullitt

This week we have a very special car in our workshops. The car has come in for some of her regular servicing and we are pleased to have her back. There are plenty of Bullitt replicas or “Clones” out there, as you have no doubt seen with the same colour etc. However driving this little lady is the closest you will ever get to the original Bullitt car, for handling, sound and look, especially here in the UK. Now we all know that Bullitt was a ’68 etc etc. This ’67 390GT in Acapulco Blue is true to the original spec Bullitt car. The car has a four speed manual with the legendary 390ci big block as you would expect. The car sounds incredible and not had the super loud exhausts on it (yet). She drives like an absolute dream and turns heads wherever she goes.

There is even a rumour that this car could be coming up for sale very soon. So, if the rumours are true, pay a visit to your bank manager and get your money ready. There is already huge interest in this pretty special car with the attention to detail as you would expect. If she is up for sale, the first person with the money gets her. An absolute classic car that will only ever go up in value.

The ’70 fastback is starting to have the back-end welded into place now. The rear quarters are dry fitted at the moment and will get some colour on the insides before the final welding up.

Adam and Yogi had an impromptu visit to the The London Classic Car Show on Friday. They decided to have a look round, the trouble is the look round ended up Adam reaching for his wallet. He did buy something and that something will appear here very soon. You don’t need to ask what it is just yet, but it’s pretty special. Adam even has some special number plates for it. As we said above – watch this space for news on that one!

Ford History Lesson:

Part 1:
When Henry Ford first set up the auto company in the 1900s he had 6 other investors and they all wanted to build expensive cars for the rich as there was more profit in such cars – like they were doing in Europe. Henry was strongly opposed to this strategy but was out-voted. He went on to developed and built a luxury car made using his skills to engineer it to extremely high standards. Once built, he decided to go his own way and to buy out his partners and start the Ford Motor Company. As part of the deal, the newly built luxury car was left with the remaining investors…..and it went on to be launched as the very first ‘Cadillac’ car!

Part 2:
Henry Ford is famed for inventing the ‘moving production line’ which allowed 50 cars a day to roll off the line. A much lesser known fact is that his grandson, Henry Ford 2 is responsible for creating the first ‘automated production line’ ……allowing 400 vehicles a day to be produced.
Part 3:
Henry Ford 2 loved the name ‘Maverick’ and wanted it for the now famous Mustang. Ford ‘owned’ the rights to the name along with 800 other names for possible future cars. But where did the name Maverick come from?
In reality there was a rich Texan cattle baron called Samuel Maverick whose claim to fail was he never branded his vast heard of cattle…as he thought the process of burning his mark into an animals skin was barbaric. So, if any cattle was found without a branded mark it was said to be a ‘Maverick’ – interestingly he lost very few cattle and had little trouble from ruthless thieves simply putting their brand on his cattle. His name became the definition of someone who did not act traditionally or conform to the rules of society in any way. So the Maverick was born….and Henry Ford 2 wanted to call the Mustang Maverick because it did not conform to any of the car rules that went before? He got his way later in the decade when Ford launched the all new Ford Maverick in the US. The name was given another outing in the 80/90s in the UK with the Ford/Nissan joint venture 4×4 – Ford Maverick and Nissan Terrano.

This week in the office customers have mentioned they like the idea of the pups being in the office. Now we can’t be sure if this is true or not, but the husbands wait for the their wives to be distracted by the pups while they pay for their parts or for the work on their cars! 😉

The Art Of Painting

The week after the Enfield Pageant is always a bust week tidying up and putting things away where they should be. Cars being worked on were moved in order to prep the cars for the Pageant, trucks transporting the cars have to be moved around and given back to LAR & SMR again. While we were moving things around we got the call from our friendly top class painter Paul. A car he had been working on was now ready to be delivered back to us. A customer owned 1967 Fastback that needs a full rebuild from bare metal. Paul had etched the car ready for the primer. (Thanks for the pictures Paul.)

The car is painted in the classic and loved Highland Green, and for those that didn’t know, Highland Green is the same colour as Steve McQueen’s Bullitt Mustang.

Multiple layers of primer added to the cars and then blocked back down again. A light coloured coat is applied to check the high and low spots.

The bodywork is masked up and paint is built up before more fine block work. Again the attention to detail is unsurpassed.

The car in various stages

The car was delivered back to us and put on the ramps in the workshop where Yogi got to work on the rebuild pretty much straight away, almost before we managed to grab some pics.

The attention to detail here is that the side detail vents that are fitted have the gaskets missing, allowing water to cause issues on the bodywork and inside. We make sure we fit those gaskets, here the subtle difference is not really noticeable, but such is our attention to detail.

The classic mistake made my so many painters on these cars is the undersill, a concours fail, if you are going that route. From the factory the paint stopped at the underside and a visible black line should be seen. Such is Paul’s level of detail.

The customer is still a little undecided about just how much work we will be doing on the car at the moment. But, we have been told the suspension, steering, brakes and rear axle are to be fitted in order to make this into a rolling chassis.

The rear diff is a very nice special build Truetrac limited slip upgrade.

The steering is getting the Borgeson Power Steering Box upgrade too.

The interior is a work of art too, the roof, floors inner arches all painted, in fact where the carpet and body panels go the paint goes there too.

The last part of the bodywork is the rubber seals in order to complete the final gaps.

The next job on her we shall have to wait and find out in due course, along with the final engine spec too.

We are going to show you some rare pictures not usually seen as the hood is closed so you don’t think of it. If anybody has tried to fit a hood spring to the hinges they will now the power of the springs and that they are not easy to fit. When the hood is up the spring is retracted so little or no pressure, but when the hood is closed an immense leverage is used to open those springs. You just don’t want to mess with these springs!

Adam is seen checking more paint colours are what the customer required that had come back to the yard taken from another Fastback. The colour is correct so the rubber is going to fitted to the trunk and given back to Paul ready to final gap the car.

This oil is designed to meet the exacting American specs and has also been developed for the Classic Car owner of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s. The oil is cheaper than the USA counterparts, but in no way a lesser product. We like this oil and would recommend it.

Ready To Race

They say things come in pairs, here at Mustang Maniac we’re not so sure. We think a new addition to our fleet of cars, goes well with our other racers which have recently been given some stripes, there is a good reason for all this, we hope to have some more news very shortly! First the new addition to our fleet which shouldn’t need any introduction. This little brute has a modern 5 speed manual gearbox, nice set of under dash gauges and drives as good as she sounds. This is a real monster of a car and the exhaust note just has to be heard to be believed.

But, just to tease you a little here are some pics of the Mustang Maniac mean machines. Which one would you pick for a blast around a track?
