Allan’s Mach 1

American Classic magazine: October 2013 Issue Number 270.

At Mustang Maniac we still get a kick out of seeing our cars featured in Magazines, TV slots (5th Gear) or on promotional posters for a big prize give away. We are delighted to say that Allan who works for us got both his and a good friends cars into American Classic magazine last October 2013, Issue Number 270. Allan’s Mach 1 is the Candy Apple Red, and his mate Spencer’s is the darker ’69. Allan built the cars, body worked them and painted them to the high standards that they are now. Together these great friends have become known as the “Bully Brothers” on the drag strip scene. We would have featured this a little earlier, but we lost our copy of the magazine but managed to get hold of another in the mean time. These cars are something else, and Allan likes nothing better than taking his car for a blast down a drag strip with some impressive times too.
We have got the full spread in pictures in single picture file format or the double pages. We have even created a full spread PDF for you to download and read at your leisure.

Mastic to Metal

The Final Chapter – Mastic to Metal

The week brings to an end the long journey of Mustang from mastic to metal. The classic ’67 Convertible transforming from a filler and mastic filled rusty dangerous car, into a safe drivable classic that will turn heads wherever she goes. We have had many views of this car’s journey to date, alas, it’s time to say goodbye to an old friend we have grown to love and proud of what she has become, the now legendary “Mastic” Mustang. The owner came down to inspect her a little while ago and wanted a few little upgrades, those upgrades are now fully completed. The upgrades were quite large and resulted in her going back to the ramps. The single exhaust is gone and new twin exhaust system is now in place. The custom-made LED conversion kit is now installed and working correctly. The last little luxury was the wooden steering wheel instead of the old original white one. The results are amazing, the car sounds like she means business, and with the hood down will make those sunny days out something to remember. The lights upgrade means that she can be seen from behind safely. The standard lamps are fine for America, but over here the flashing rears can be a little difficult to spot. We are pleased to say that the road test was as good as we expected it to be. We took her for her MOT which she obviously passed first time round. The owner will be picking her up this week and we wish him many happy hours driving her. We will be a little sad to see her go, but there will be more.  We have uploaded a video of this Mustang starting up on YouTube here,  or you can go to the quick link below.

A quick recap where she was when we got her:

Stock News:

Gauges

We have bought a stock of various gauges as they become available for various years and options. You can buy them of bid sites if you’re lucky but it’s a bit of gamble. Speak to us first to see if we have the new gauge you want for your car.

Shocks:

We were asked a while ago if we had any gas-filled shocks, we had a limited supply but we now have upped the stock to cater for this option should you wish to upgrade of course.

New (Old) Company Car

This week we have added to the company fleet of vehicles. We have the newer Smart car in the Mustang Maniac livery of course, but we decided we wanted something a little more “us” if that makes sense. We wanted a car that would allow us to pick up larger parts, put them in the back to bring back to the yard. The Smart car is an ideal run around, but not to good with anything to be picked up over the size of the passenger seat. But our new car had to have character just like the cars we look after. We have been looking around for a while now then this little beauty came up. 1965 Ford Falcon Ranchero, we just had to have it, I do believe we will be using this on a daily basis, the only problem is – who gets to the keys first. The Ford Mustang was heavily based on the Falcon and many parts of the Falcon can be seen on the 1964 1/2 Mustangs. So as I bought the car back to the yard the general consensus was it was a good purchase and instantly adopted as the work shop truck.

Parked out the front of the offices:

A little more detail: (Excuse the health lunch on the seat – it was a long drive!)

Al was the first to jump in and claimed it as his new toy!

We have added the car to “Our Cars” pages with a little history of both the Ford Falcon and Ranchero which can be found here.

Cars:

The KR Replica has been fired up with the full exhaust fitted. The tips have now been added and finished the back of the car perfectly. The aircon is topped up, the engine is topped up with “Evans” waterless coolant. We are now going to take her to our geometry bay where will align the wheels, tracking camber etc ready for the road test. The interior seats will be with us soon and will be fitted as soon as they get here. The carb needs a final tune and she should be ready for collection. We are looking forward to the road test of the beauty.

We have taken a video of the KR starting up and placed it on YouTube click here or click the logo below to go to our channel.

We should have a few more pictures next week of the ’66 Coupe Strip down.

News:

The WebShop sales has been going well and proving quite popular with a the full list of items we have in stock. It could be possible we might need somebody to look after the online sales for us soon. Thank you all for your support.

Visit our WebShop on www.mustangmaniac.co.uk if you haven’t already to see the improvements. Leave us feedback too.

Counting

This week we have had to do a little work we weren’t expecting to do for a little while. The new WebShop facility we offer is going well, and our sales have been going to our regular customers as well as some new ones too. So we would like to say a big Thank You to those who have ordered from us recently. I hope you were one of the lucky ones to get the key hook. Back to what I was saying, the work is the dreaded stock taking! Yep, we have sold a few items and we are now starting to take control of the exact numbers we have in stock. We have bought in bulk to keep the costs down and ordered more, the reason was that in our organised chaos store rooms we thought we had lost a box of parts. We subsequently found them and we decided that we won’t need to order many more of them for a while. A picture was taken inside one of the cars in the grave yard for our Mustangs that are yet to have work done on them. The weather has obviously washed and blown some of the debris about and this was the result, an original grill Coral uncovered. We won’t be counting this one as part of our stock though.

R.I.P

The cars:

The now restored Mastic Mustang has been having the finishing touches of our bespoke LED upgrade kit added to front and rears.  One man’s Mustang Coupe now has her gearbox and prop shaft out now we have jacked her up onto tall axle stands. We shall have some more photos of this one soon for you. The Rolls Royce has now been completed and back out of the workshops. We have also delivered a couple of cars back to the owners that were serviced for their yearly check ups.

Swap Out

Lots to report this week:

We have had a busy week, and we are getting on very well with the cars that are almost at the end of their little projects. The good weather has enabled us to dry out our flooded panel shop and move cars around as we needed to without worrying about the customer’s cars getting wet. That means we had a swap out of cars in, and cars out. We have uploaded videos to YouTube and had new stock too.

KR Update:

This car has been fired up and as we expected sounds incredible with a slightly more modern sounding bark to the engine thanks to the exhausts. The amps have been set in place on carpet and the stainless steel fuel tank has been left exposed as requested. We think it’s a good shout as it does look pretty good sitting in there.

The engine has a couple of tiny links to be made for the pipes that are hidden outside the engine bay then that area is finished. We have fitted an electric Scott Drake fuel pump to her as we want to make sure there is no flat spot in the carb when it gets nailed going down the road. We made a custom bracket for the pump to protect it from the road rubbish.

The interior now has the centre console in place and the hand brake connected up. The seat upholstery should be with us soon and she is ready to roll.

Mastic Mustang Update:

This heading of the Mastic Mustang is a little unfair now as there is no mastic in this lovely car at all now. We thought she was done and ready to go, but the owner wanted a couple of little upgrades, replace the single exhaust to a duel exhaust system, the rear lights are to have our bespoke LED light board kit fitted and a new steering wheel. The exhaust system makes her sound lovely and with the top down she is now a pleasure to drive. Full story of the project start to finish can be found here.

One Man’s Mustang:

As we have made some space and sold a car or two we have made space for another vehicle to come in to us for the heavier side of restoration work. The vehicle is a ’66 project Coupe 289ci owned by a fellow blogger http://onemanandhismustang.com He has been a customer of ours now for a number of years and you can visit his blog where you can see his previous work to date on this car.

As she arrived and we got her of the lorry and straight up on the ramps to look at some of the previous work which may need to be redone, such as the shock tower and inner wings that weren’t very well done before Mart bought her. The chassis needs a little work too in the usual places and maybe replace a rear chassis leg. We will need a thorough check once we have taken the rotten panels off. But, once we have tidied up the chassis and replaced a few bits and a panel or two, we will line her all up then she should be ready for a little paint.

As we need the ramps for existing work to continue on Monday we pushed the Coupe out to her new home for a little while – our panel shop.

With the transporter lorry now cleared we were able to load up an Australian right hand drive ’67 Coupe which will be delivered to the owner on Monday. We have worked on this little lady before and all the work can be found here.

Unusual car in for a little work:

Another unusual car we have been asked to provide some tender loving care by us on this Rolls Royce. The owner also owns a couple of Mustangs that we have worked on. Not our normal car, but a pleasant change. The carpets in here are deeper than most of the carpets in a house!

New Stock:

We have a UK made Race prepared, heat-treated and zero balanced flywheel for your classic small block Mustang. This is not a cheap part but can make a lot of difference. Give us a call for our prices and availability.

LED Lights:

We promised that we would post a link to our KR replica LED light work. The Shelby lights have had our one-off and bespoke LED lights made to fit and we have posted a link on YouTube to show them. As if by magic a customer of ours has taken a night-time video of the LED light board kit we offer for the ’65 – ’66 Mustangs and can also be found on our YouTube channel.

News:

Mustang Maniac has a new company car for the guys to pick up small parts, (pints of milk or lunch from the village too),  or nipping between the different sites. For some reason the objected to the original idea of the antique bike! The car is not quite the big beast we are used to, but this will help the environment for those little run around jobs we all have to make now and again. The upside is the signwriting on the side, OK all over it promotes our business where ever we may go. You got to be Smart these days when it comes to cars.

KR update:

This has car has come a long way this week and the electrics are almost completed. The rear lights look incredible with the flasher units in place, we have added our bespoke running LED bulbs to the front of the car with clear lenses, they run a normal white side light, but when indicators are used they will flash orange. The main headlights are Ford badged right hand lenses to give the correct illumination to the road. We will be posting a very quick video of the front and rear lights in action on this car on our YouTube channel very soon. We will post an update when we have edited the footage together.

The dash has been fitted and looks very impressive next to the modern radio in the dash.

The exhaust needs a little more fine tuning to fit properly as we have added a rear anti-roll bar. We seriously recommend this upgrade if you are going to drive it like you stole it! The rear anti-roll bar makes quite a difference to the predictability of handling, especially with this much power on tap to hit the road.

The sound system is in which has some very nice mounting for the speakers in the rear, we just have to mount the twin amps in the rear quarters, you’re going to hear this coming down the road via the exhaust or hear the music, one way or the other it will turn heads!

The engine has been given some more very nice updates via the new polished power steering pump reservoir and looks fantastic against the black inner wings. We have swapped the spark plug leads to orange instead of the yellow to match the bodywork, a very subtle change, but it has made a huge difference. The Scott Drake Stainless fuel tank has also been fitted now.

The wheels are ready and when fitted they just set the whole car off. Not sure how long the first set of boots will last on this spectacular car, but if it were our car, they wouldn’t last that long 🙂

The interior is being fabricated at the moment and we will bring another update of interior when we fit that in. We have of course updated the ’68 KR Replica page in the Customer Cars section as well for the whole story.

Stock:

A large delivery of rear leaf springs has been delivered as we seemed to have sold a number of them fairly quickly for some reason. More stainless steel parts have arrived and we are pleased with the polished Monte Carlo bars, again a couple have already been sold as the older and tired chrome ones have been replaced.

KR Replica Update

Things are moving on very nicely with the KR replica. We are now finishing the custom exhaust, rear lights and detail of the engine. The inside has the shifter in place and the custom wiring location is looking very good for that under the hood minimalistic look which was a request for this build. The sound proofing is in to insulate the cabin from the bark of the exhausts. The air conditioning has been piped up and the rest of the water pipes are being fitted. The oil sump is polished, the exhaust is polished, the door strikers are polished and the whole look of the car just begs your attention. The rear lights have had some of our bespoke LED lighting units fitted into the classic all red lenses that will flash orange for the indicators, but they can’t be seen until used which will maintain that stock factory look. Detail on this car is fantastic and has to be seen to be believed.

Our Yard:

Meanwhile all this great work has been going on with the KR we were caught unaware by a flash flood. It looks like a small section of a stream not to far from us was blocked and water backed up very quickly and crept into the yard. The water also got to one of the workshops, but we fired the pump up and drained it all out, but as the stream was full it was a bit of a nightmare to be honest. We would like to point out that the customers cars were out of the way in other work shops so they were safe which is a priority of course. The one workshop with water and a customer car was lifted into the air, Sorted. The dogs were a little confused by the water although a couple of them didn’t seem to mind! It could have been a lot worse.

Multiple Updates & News

Stock, nuts and the mastic Mustang…

We have had a couple of requests to buy some nuts and bolts not a whole pack. We though about it and decided to get some in as it wasn’t such a bad idea. We now have lots of little containers full of random nuts and bolts we use. You know what it’s like to have a single rounded of nut and want a single nut or bolt, well I believe we can now help you out with that. What has driven us nuts (poor pun – sorry), is the separating and categories of the different sizes. We have a picture of one of just one of the racks we use for the indoor light engineering workshop by the office. This now sits nicely with the lengths of pipe we now sell too by the metre. I don’t want to stock take these bits, but it has to be done every so often.  Speaking of stock, what we didn’t want to do, we have done it, we have run out of room again with all the new parts, we are now floor to ceiling capacity with the smaller items in the small parts store. But we have plans to stock more.

Stock and the Web page:

Why do we have so much stock now? Simple, we are getting ready for our new web site launch. This will have a very nice online ordering, with stock status so you don’t have to ring us up to get your parts. We hope to have pretty much everything we can of the popular parts. But where there is a special order in the unlikely event that we don’t have it, we hope to get it pretty quickly thanks to our regular shipping dates. Watch this space!!!

New stock of the Scott Drake high performance shocks for the front and rear end of most years are in now in stock. They are great quality, high performance, and all from a name you can trust. The prices aren’t shocking either! (Sorry for another bad pun).

The Mastic Mustang update pictures.

We mentioned last week that the car was off the jig and now she sits on the ramps. We have taken a number of pictures again to show the work and how much she has changed. We have even done some nice welding work underneath. The anti rust pre treatment has gone over the welds and we have a few more places to do such as the rear quarters where we will do it all at the same time. This car will handle so much better now. The engine and gearbox are to go back in and the wiring up soon. Once she is on the floor we will check everything is aligned where it should be and then she can go back to the owner. We have updated the page itself for the car so you can see the before and after results here.

KR Replica:

We hope to bring some updated pictures in the next post for the KR Replica which is starting to look pretty awesome with some great work done by the guys. Again watch this space.

A Classic British Ford

The week has been a strange one, lots going on but not a lot to show for it. We have made a little more progress on the Mastic Mustang. The car is now off the jig and standing on its own, on the floor. We are now happy with the way it has welded up and come together, as a result the car is now very different to look at. The main thing obviously being you can’t see the ground through the floor pans or the sills, except where you are supposed to of course. We will now start to put the rest of the car back together when we can. We have been trying to lay some flooring down for the new garage we have in mind. The poor weather has played havoc with the best laid plans should we say, having to arrange the delivery of the concrete when it would be ok to pour (forgive the pun, Pour – Poor, get it!)

Our old classic Mk1 Ford Cortina returns to our yard:

We have received back into the yard a dear old friend that has been with us for years but has been stored elsewhere, by looking at it, it looks to have had unknown items stored in it! Of course we are talking about the mighty Ford Cortina. Our little example needs some serious loving and pampering, but we have plans for her, not right now, so she will have to wait a little while longer. To be fair we have seen and have much worse looking cars here and is not in a to bad a state, But – it’s good to see her back again.

About the Mk1 Cortina

I could write-up the details and the history as we know them, but we have got some more historical background for you about the car.

Using the project name of “Archbishop”, management at Ford of Britain in Dagenham created a family sized car which they could sell in large numbers. The chief designer was Roy Brown Jr., the designer of the Edsel, who had been banished to Dagenham following the failure of that car. The Cortina, aimed at buyers of the Morris Oxford and Vauxhall Victor, was launched on 20 September 1962. The car was designed to be economical, cheap to run and easy and inexpensive to produce in Britain. The front-wheel drive configuration used by Ford of Germany for the new Ford Taunus P4, a similarly sized model, was rejected in favour of traditional rear-wheel drive layout. Originally to be called Ford Consul 225, the car was launched as the Consul Cortina until a modest facelift in 1964, after which it was sold simply as the Cortina.

The Cortina was available with 1200  and 1500 four-cylinder engines with all synchromesh gearbox, in two-door and four-door saloon, as well as a four-door estate forms. Standard, Deluxe, Super, and GT trims were offered but not across all body styles. Early Standard models featured a simple body coloured front grille, earning it the nickname ‘Ironbar’. Since this version cost almost the same as the better equipped Deluxe it sold poorly and is very rare today. Options included heater and bench seat with column gearchange. Super versions of the estates offered the option of simulated wood side and tailgate trim. In an early example of product placement many examples of the brand new Cortina featured as “Glamcabs” in the British classic comedy film – Carry On Cabby.

There were two main variations of the Mark 1. The Mark 1a possessed elliptical front side-lights, whereas the Mark 1b had a re-designed front grille incorporating the more rectangular side-light and indicator units. A notable variant was the legendary Lotus Cortina.

The Cortina was launched a few weeks before the London Motor Show of October 1962 with a 1198 cc 3-bearing engine, which was an enlarged version of the 997 cc engine then fitted in the Ford Anglia. A few months later, in January 1963, the Cortina Super was announced with a 5-bearing 1498 cc engine. Versions of the larger engine found their way into subsequent variations, including the Cortina GT which appeared in Spring 1963 with lowered suspension and engine tuned to give a claimed output of 78 bhp (58 kW; 79 PS) ahead of the 60 bhp (45 kW; 61 PS) claimed for the Cortina 1500 Super. The engines used across the Mark I range were of identical design, differing only in capacity and setup. The formula used was a four-cylinder pushrod (Over Head Valve) design that came to be known as the “pre-crossflow” version as both inlet and exhaust ports were located on the same side of the head. The most powerful version of this engine (used in the GT Cortina) was 1498 cc (1500) and produced 78 bhp (58 kW). This engine contained a different camshaft profile, a different cast of head featuring larger ports, tubular exhaust headers and a Weber double barrel carburettor.

Advertising of the revised version, which appeared at the London Motor Show in October 1964, made much of the newly introduced “Aeroflow” through-flow ventilation, evidenced by the extractor vents on the rear pillars. A subsequent test on a warm day involving the four different Cortina models manufactured between 1964 and 1979 determined that the air delivery from the simple eye-ball outlets on the 1964 Mark I Cortina was actually greater than that on the Mark II, the Mark III or the Mark IV. The dashboard, instruments and controls were revised, for a the second time, having already been reworked in October 1963 when round instruments replaced the strip speedometer with which the car had been launched: twelve years later, however, the painted steel dashboard, its “knobs scattered all over the place and its heater controls stuck underneath as a very obvious afterthought” on the 1964 Mark I Cortina was felt to have aged much less well than the car’s ventilation system. It was also in 1964 that front disc brakes became standard across the range.

Lotus Cortina models were solely offered as two-door saloons all in white with a contrasting green side flash down each flank. Lotus Cortinas had a unique 1557 cc twin-cam engine by Lotus, but based on the Cortina’s Kent OHV engine. Aluminium was used for some body panels. For a certain time, it also had a unique A-frame rear suspension, but this proved fragile and the model soon reverted to the standard Cortina semi-elliptic rear end.
