Burnin’ Rubber & War Paint

This week we have moved away from the yard to somewhere a little more exciting – Santa Pod Raceway. The track was hired out for a private session by the “A602 Street & Strip Rods” their web link can be found here. They have invited Mustang Maniac out to play on the Friday this week and how could we say no? Well we didn’t actually. Adam had uncovered the UBB 1000bhp Mustang after it had been sitting in storage for seven years, he prepped the car “by giving it a clean” apparently.  [Editor: Somebody tell me that he was joking – right?]  The car was taken up on the LAR newest lorry for a little run out as well.

There was Adam, Yogi and Spence who were going to go down the strip. The plan for the day was to pay your track fee and you can go down the track as many times as you wanted. There was a good selection of cars, anything from daily driver Ford Kuga to full Pro Mod strip racers. Some of the races was like watching slow motion, others were intense where every tenth of a second counted. We have to take our hats or should that be crash helmets off to all those who had a go, regardless of their car. The weather was perfect, a hot sunny day to keep the newly coated raceway nice and sticky.

So in no particular order we have tried to group the pictures in a sequence. First up is Adam with his very first run with his UBB, with no burn out.

Adam had lots of wheel spin and bounced the rev limiter at the end, it still gave him his first run of 12.4 with a manual shift on a road car. We asked Adam how do you know when to change gear without a shift change light; his reply was typical Adam: “When it hits the rev limiter.” We think he was joking – wasn’t he?

Yogi set a personal best for the day, although he was still not happy about it as he botched a gear change and still posted a pretty epic 11.4

This set of pictures Yogi asked us to look at his wrinkles; “Tyres, on the (Bleep) tyres, not on me.” You can see what he means as the tyres twist and wrinkle up under the stress of being launched.

Next up was Spence setting some great times in the low 13’s.

There was two races that were building up, Adam vs Yogi, and Yogi vs Spence. Adam went for a second run and had a miss-fire and had bit of smoke. Back in the paddock the initial diagnosis was an injector not jetting correctly. So the UBB was retired in order not damage it. However – Yogi had prepped the car before the day out, on lifting the bonnet to spot any obvious problems, Adam spotted that the battery lead was loose. Yep – suspected foul play from the Bear camp was rumoured. A full inquest will be had back at the yard over a Jaffa cake or three and a few cups of tea for weeks to come.

The paddock was full of some serious race cars and hot rods.

Some of the other cars varied from an old Land Rover to Prod Mod racers as we said before dropping into the mid 9’s.

The eagerly awaited race between the best of friends Yogi and Spence. 

Yogi won on the day for this showdown. The guys also tried to out do each other on the burn out front too. The war paint here says it was about even! Although Yogi claims that on the video he was winner there too. I dare say more Jaffa cakes and cups of tea will sort that debate out as well.

Spence also wanted to race another friend of his Dave G in his Mustang. This time Spence nailed a convincing win.

The other cars made for some great racing too. Look for the wrinkles on the “Heavy Chevy” here too.

There were a few casualties of the day, but that is racing. And there general consensus is that it’s not as easy at it looks! We hope to get these videos up on our YouTube channel as well soon.

Putting The Brakes On

Servicing of cars has been the order of the day, not so much Mustangs but our own commercial vehicles, from vans to trucks. We have been busy rearranging our stores to accept a new range but more on that below. One of our customers has sent us a picture which we just had to share with you which made us laugh, (but don’t tell Yogi that). You are probably aware that we have little flurries of this so-called “Yogi Fan Club” which seems to be a picking up pace again, not that we want to encourage such things with our very own big friendly bear. So this picture has been explained to us as this; Batman has a spot light that calls him into action, and according to Yogi himself the clouds tell him that “Somebody’s Mustang is in trouble – I need Yogi”. Please, can we stop encouraging the bear with pictures like this! 😀 (We love it really!)

Got The Hump?

The pace has calmed down a little in the yard we are pleased to say, and we concentrating on the general servicing on the cars we have waiting for us. We have also been working on a pretty unique car in the mean time which has brought with it its own problems for us to sort out, and we have learned from it all in the process. You will have to wait a while until we bring that story in another post soon. Last week we posted a little early about Jacqui’s fully restored ’69, as we predicted the car was completed with no problems a few days later. Here we have a quick snap as the car was picked up and taken home with Roy in the driving seat and Jacqui riding shot-gun. (What – still no sunglasses Roy?) 😂

The interior needed the finishing touches and then another final road test. It was an excuse really to drive this lovely lady. The steering wheel was the last decision and what a great choice it was too.

The door cards were ok, and could have been fitted back on, however there was a small tear on the driver’s side by the handle, a common place to show wear. When you have gone to this much trouble, it’s all down to the details. The carpet on the doors looked ok, until you compare them to the new carpet. The looked positively grey next to the black carpet in fact. So to keep as much originality as possible we transferred as many parts as we could to the new door cards. The result is we have a restored car that looks as though it’s being used and retains the original character of the car.

The centre console was fixed in place and final trim fittings added. Then the final drive to check for rattles and squeaks but all was good and Jacqui got the call. “She’s all done and ready for you.”

Customer Cars

There were so many options available on the early Mustang when you ordered one, that all the combinations reportedly “ran into the millions”. A fairly expensive option at the time was the centre console. This was either full all the way up under the dash or had the even more expensive factory air-con option under the dash and the alternative console fitted under that with different fittings. To get genuine original parts are rare, fragile and can be silly expensive unless you “go repro”! The long transmission tunnel can be a large expanse of carpet, so if you want the best of both worlds there is an answer, Hump Hugger. The Hump Hugger fits all cars from ’64 to ’73 and comes in a wide range of colours to match your interior. The best part? It’s held in place by velcro that won’t let go when you drive around a corner, so there’s no drilling or extra holes to be made, which means it can be removed at any time. As  Father’s day is on the 17th June next weekend. We have lots of stock, from a few washers all the way to a complete body shell all online from our WebShop, no need to call us. Another 1 Done

The end of the week was made that bit special for us as a long project received a final push over the line and reached a massive milestone. With regards to the heading we obviously mean another Mach1 is fully restored and on the road after passing her nut and bolt restoration’s first MOT. Jacqui’s full ’69 restoration was driven to the MOT centre where it passed with flying colours.  We have broken our own little protocol here by posting about the car, before it’s officially handed back over. We have a couple of outstanding finishing touches like refitting of the door cards and swapping over the steering wheel, but nothing major at all. Then Jacqui’s Mach1 is completely finished. So we thought it was OK to post a little earlier than normal.

Here the car is ready to go for the final road test and Paul took a great video of the occasion. We deliberately left the door cards off just in case we need to adjust anything in the door itself, such as rattles and squeaks etc. etc. Yogi takes the car out the yard and stops to make final adjustments to mirrors etc. We think it was more like the bear wanted more camera time from what we can tell! Just sayin’!

Roy & Jacqui turned up on Saturday after the good news and took a look at their little lady. Roy couldn’t wait to drive her around the yard for a little drive, and the smile says it all. To us that makes it all worth while.

The inside is once again a lovely place to be now;

Yogi has been busy adding the final touches under the hood – the stickers. The attention to detail with regards to the zinc fittings says it all, you don’t notice them straight away which means they are not out-of-place. But when you do you spot them, the wow factor is there. Gas of the aircon to keep cool in the current fine weather is also next on the shrinking small list of things to do, but when a car is this cool do you need gas?

But there is one sticker that you can’t buy from us, in effect it’s awarded and never just given; The Mustang Maniac Restoration Number. Discreet and out the way, but those who know, we mean really know about “restored” Mustangs, they will look for this ultimate seal of approval.

Soon Jacqui, really soon then she is all yours again. 

More Enfield Pageant 2018

A huge thanks to Gábor Kiss who has sent us a link to his Google Drive cloud storage where we could take a look at his pictures he had taken of our cars on show. We were given the kind permission to use what we wanted, so we downloaded the lot!
