More Space And Chairs

The start of the year has been a little bit of a wash out regarding the outside expansion work we wanted to do. But we have found space that wasn’t filled up with Mustang parts, but it is now! The roof space of one of our buildings has had a little conversion to it and John has been busy reinforcing the floor to take the weight, not that its that heavy the stuff we are storing there, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. It’s doesn’t pay to be tall up there as the roof is quite low, that’s why there are chairs up there, and a kettle, and some tea bags, so I am told anyway! Pleased with the extra space we have promptly filled it up and now have an additional place to sit and have a cuppa on the cold winter days picking the stock, without having to go to the office.

We have had a ’67 Mustang Coupe customer car in this week that was shipped over from the USA, the car was reported to have some issues with the shock tower. We inspected the tower and confirmed that the tower did indeed need replacing, like pretty urgently in fact.

While we cut the tower out we also noticed the battery tray was also not the best as it just had a plate welded to some rotten metal, so we recommended that being changed as well. It was a good piece of plate but not much use when the metal it’s attached to falls to bits.

I our eagerness just before the end of the year we posted a superb example of a BMW that was used by a foreign embassy we forgot to post a couple of pictures of the inside boot area that hasn’t been used from what we can tell. The engine runs like a dream and only has some tiny weathering to it, other than that it looks like new. So here are the missing pictures:

Stainless Steel Stock

Chrome vs Stainless Steel

As promised from the last post we have got around to unpacking and labelling up some new stock. We have had a few enquiries about polished stainless steel instead of chrome in the past. We have ordered in one of items on a bespoke arrangement, so we though we would try some various items. There are two camps and very much sit on each side of the fence. Chrome will or won’t get you home as the saying goes. Many manufacturers make claims for their chrome work some are better than others should we say. At the end of the day chrome finish is just a thin layer on the outside of the part, like paint in fact. For that reason chrome plating tends to be brittle and gets chips and scratches on it over time. On the other hand stainless steel is not as shiny as chrome plating, but the appearance lies somewhere around shiny chrome plating and dull aluminium. Stainless steel is just steel that has about 20% chrome mixed with it which prevents most rust. As a result stainless steel is far better at maintaining its appearance over time scratches and dents don’t affect it. If the part gets some rust spots in it, just buy some stainless steel polish and buff the rust out, simple as that. Areas where the car can be weathered are prone to the chrome pitting if not cared for, so the areas that can be abused are the engine, such as the alternators etc need to be looked after.

As a result of the enquiries we have got our first small batch of stock for our stainless steel line to see how the sales go, we have already sold a few bits and like the dip stick we recommend these in places instead of chrome. The initial sales look promising, polish the parts up well and you will hardly notice the difference, except that it will keep its appearance a lot better. The first batch of products is the Dip Stick for a ’65-’67, hood latch for a ’67-’68 and a battery hold down kit for ’67 – ’70. Let us know if you want any particular parts and we will see how they go. We have added a section under the new parts for Stainless Steel.  Give us a call for prices and dispatch.

All Hands To The Pump

Has the world’s weather has gone crazy?

America is being thrashed by snow gales and stupid cold temperatures that are breaking records, the UK is seeing more rain than it can cope with, again. Last year we had droughts and hose pipe bans would you believe. We have not escaped completely unscathed, but we have been here before and we are well prepared, in fact, a bit like cracking an egg with hammer to be precise. The pits that some of the cars sit over in the lesser used work shops can turn into small swimming pools if we don’t kept an eye on them. With that in mind, a while ago we purchased a water pump for that very reason. It wasn’t an ordinary pump as you would expect. It’s a pump from the old British Army fire engines, named the Green Goddess. The original brief was to design a portable pump that could be carried by two men (they would have to be big men mind you) to the source of the water and used to pump water back for the hoses for a fire. It can move a staggering one thousand litres in a minute. Where am I going with this?  Well, it has a car engine as the power source – of course. The engine was used for racing and was also known as the Coventry Climax which was later fitted into the more common road car known as the Hillman Imp in road spec of course. However in race spec for its class, the Hillman Imp was pretty good racer thanks to the very versatile engine that was light, strong and would rev its little cylinders out all day long.

The pump looked to have seen better days and had not been started for a number of years. We found out that the magneto wasn’t working, hence no life. But we had a plan, we fitted it with a coil and battery to spark her into life and it now works. We will get round to fixing the magneto, but for now we like the retro wind up handle and the power from a battery and coil, the hand cabled throttle control, the one gallon fuel tank, the tiny water tank etc. We will also paint it back to its proper green colour and restore it properly, but for now its doing it’s job, and doing it very well. It was a good buy for historical reasons and also does a brilliant job decades on.

pump1

The down side of this pump, we start it up, it clears the water, it being the pits fill up again, we start the pump and the cycle repeats. The current drainage works fine and is always pretty good except for the most adverse condition like we are having now. So we have to keep watch, we can even have some fun with it and rev it up for max pump or slow it down for a more sustained pumping, which is still too fast for what we really need. We would rather have it that way round than having a pump that can’t keep up to be honest. The other issue with the design is the open air, the rain on it can make things a little damp should we say. But, we have Gibbs Brand, a generous spray with the Gibbs keeps the parts water tight and she starts pretty much first time, every time now.

The high winds also had an effect on some of the trees unfortunately, so we decided to cut a rather precarious looking tree down before it damaged anything. We also had a little lake form where the debris from the trees blocked some drainage, we cleared the blockage and the pump sorted the rest out as well.

Wikipedia has some good notes on the Hillman Imp which I have added at the bottom, along with the Green Goddess and Coventry Climax engines, there is much too much information to post here on it all but it’s worth a quick look.

Classic American Magazine Article

January Edition 2014

What a way to start the new year ! We were delighted to find that a photo shot that was done a little while ago with us has appeared in the great magazine, “Classic American Magazine” January edition 2014 no. 273 priced at £4.20. The article is a four page spread of our rare 1965 Indy 500 Pace Car which covers the restoration of the car and its history. We were especially pleased that the article appeared in the same issue that the Classic American Magazine has a big feature on the Ford Mustang at 50 years old. We recommend you buy one for the souvenir edition of the Mustang at 50 before they all go and the February edition hits the shelves. We have scanned the article pages individually or as a double spread for pictures for you to view, we have even added them as large single PDF’s and double page PDF’s in order for you to read about our treasured car.

Very Diplomatic

A Rare Official Embassy Vehicle

Another very busy week trying to get things cleared as much as we can before Christmas. This week we have had another very unusual car arrive at our garages to give it our once over. This car is all original and what makes this car unique is its history. The car was once used by a diplomats for a certain foreign embassy, to be chauffeur driven around or to be used by the officials themselves. This car is in superb condition and still has the tell-tale flag fittings in place on the front wings. BMW’s have made some great cars in the past and this is a perfect collectors car with hardly any work needing to be done on it. We’re not sure if the mats in the car are from the embassy, but we like to think so! Like we have said a few times before, it’s not quite our normal muscle car madness, but this is well worth the mention on our blog.

Classic ’68 KR Replica

We have done a number of custom builds in the past ranging from just the engine to the bodywork, or complete cars from the ground up. But, every so often we get an unusual request for something a little different and a nice challenge. For this project we have been asked to start work on a ’68 KR Replica. We have had the shell painted for a while now and stored, but nothing has been done up till now for various reasons.

We have a before picture and what we expect as an after picture, all be it in different colours of course.

We are excited about this project as it’s different from the other builds and a rare car in itself, as there are not many replicas around either we guess that makes this replica just as rare. This car will be eye-popping in presence as well as performance. The donor car is a ’67 but it will be kitted out to the ’68 spec when the original KR’s was launched. the differential is a little different on this build as we have added a Truetrac diff. The principle is pretty much the same as the limited slip differentials of today. We hope the power from this beast of an engine will be able to be used to its full potential with this diff in place.

Most of the parts back in the car and starting the tidy up of the engine bay and work on the interior.

We have added the page to the Customer Cars Menu and we will be updating this when we get some more progress, click here for the quick link.

We have had a large shipment in of some left and right hand side floor pans for the early ’64 – ’73 Mustangs that we have been waiting for. We will check to see if it’s the full consignment or not tomorrow it should be as it looks like it, but give us a call for more information.

El Camino

We have a customer who owns a Mustang and we look after it for him. Recently he has purchased a vehicle and has asked us to work our magic on it for him. Yes, we do work on Mustangs as our preferred vehicles, we even used to work on Porsches at the same time too, we even work on the odd UK car as well. We were talked into turning this solid and quite cool El Camino round into a road worthy state. We like a challenge and something a little different now and again so we agreed. Some of the mechanics need to be replaced due to rust and rotting issues in the usual places. The other additions are upgrades such as the disc front brakes, the carburetor, distributer, manifold, UK right hand side spec lights, the exhaust has been custom-made to take the extra punch from the Holley 600CFM Carb it now has in place etc etc. you get the idea anyway.

We’re looking forward to giving this beast a blast once she’s done.

The engine has had an integral, distributer, electronic ignition and coil fitted at the back of the engine. The Holley looks good in place with the custom-made linkage fitted. Plenty of chrome to be added yet.

The old carb and intake

The old drums removed and were replaced with disc conversions.

Custom exhaust that sounds as good as it looks! (the old drums still in place at the time we fitted the exhaust)

Mastic Mustang Update

Floor Basics

It has been a very busy week so far but we have kept the foot on the gas and we have made some great strides on the famous Mastic Mustang.  All of a sudden things are looking really good for her again with the floor pan in place, the cross strengthening brace and the torque boxes going in. We have some action pics of the welding of the floor pan welding taking place, I think I kept out-of-the-way! It looks like the rust has now been given its marching orders and we take some more steps forward with getting her back together.

The full update is on the ’67 Mastic Mustang Convertible under the Customer Cars Menu, or click here for the quick link.

We hope to have some more pics soon of this convertible soon, she will be a different beast once the body work starts going back on and lining up the body work properly.

The seasonal requests for the nice to have and not so much essentials products such as chrome instead of the black etc. has started and it reminds us just how close to the end of the year we are. The odd extra tin of Gibbs Brand and some manuals we recently had are also selling too. If you are stuck for some ideas for a Christmas gift for the Mustang in your life give us a call for some ideas!
